any triathletes out there? a question.

I'm signed up for my first sprint tri on April 10th. Do I NEED to get tri shorts/top etc? Can it be done in a bathing suit and shorts? I'm not opposed to buying them if they're necessary, but we just started a stricter budget this month and I'm trying to get out of the habit of buying things just to have them (e.g. buying scuba gear prior to getting pregnant with twins and letting it sit in a closet ever since it's first and only use). My hope is that I'll love triathlons and get into it and buy the shorts eventually, but I haven't even done one yet so who knows if I'll actually like doing it.

  • I'm not anywhere near it, but I believe gumiberg is.  She might be good to ask.

  • ooo are you doing marqui?

i do suggest getting tri shorts.  you can swim in them, bike in them and run in them.  i dont know what you would wear otherwise...i guess a swim suit and then throw on shorts over it? i think it would be uncomfortable.

you can use your tri shorts as cycling shorts - so its not just a one-time use item.

anyway, i wear the top of a 2-piece speedo - that way its a swim suit and sports bra at the same time with my tri shorts.  very comfortable and easy.

you will need a wetsuit, too but you can rent those.

and i am curious, are you a member of lifetime fitness?

  • I'm no triathlete, but I did a mini one once (1/2 mile swim, 12 mile bike, 5k run) in shorts and a suit.  The suit had a shelf bra in it and my boobs aren't very big :)

Janjag! Someone asked a few days ago where you were and I realized I hadn't seen you on here in a while either. I was starting to get worried.  So funny how you can actually get worried about people you've never met before. ;)

That said, I wasn't on too much either so maybe I just missed you.

Yep! DH is doing the Vistancia race this week in Peoria and I might join him. The swim is shorter.  I'll think I'll bite the bullet and get some shorts. They're not that expensive, but DH and I just had the "we've got to stop spending money" talk. Guess that will start tomorrow.

Yeah, I go to the Lifetime in north Scottsdale. What makes you ask? Are you a member there?

i am a member although i usually go to the one in tempe (elliot and price).  your daycare post made it sound like you go there as well - not many gyms have daycares like that.

i'm in central phx by the zoo and i would be willing to go to the scottsdale gym if you ever want to meet up.  we can put the kids in daycare and swim or something.  or take the kids swimming!

i would love to do marqui but i have not spent any time in the pool except for one day last week...haha.  I just googled the vistancia one and that looks great! i have never done a tri in a pool but it may be a good starting tri for you if you dont have open water experience.

i think you wont regret the shorts - they are so comfortable and simple.  plus, you will love the triathlon. its oodles of fun.  but they ARE expensive, i will warn you now.  first comes the races, next comes the gear.  i wont even tell you how much i just spent on a new bike.

We definitely should meet up. I have plenty of days off, but my schedule is all over the place. Maybe PM me with days that are good for you and we'll figure out a time.

Thanks, I'm OK!  Been spending time on another off board, and also nesting and vegging :D

Good luck on your triathalon - that is very cool!  I wonder if I'll ever run a mile again ;)

  • I'm late to the party, but you can easily do a sprint tri with just shorts and a swim top.  However, I wouldn't do a longer one without padded shorts. If you think you'll get into it, I'd invest in them at some point.  THey make SUCH a difference!  Good luck.  Tri's are a damn good time.
