Baby Names

What are your thoughts about the name Yvette?

I love it because it is my grandmother's name, but I would throw up in my mouth a little bit whenever someone shortened it to Evie.

  • hm... I know I've seen this name before, but I really don't know how to pronounce it. Is it "Vette" or "Ee-vette" or am I off altogether?! Honestly though, despite that little confusion, I like it! Unique/uncommon names are great, plus family meaning is extra great!

  • I don't like Yvette but Claire Dane's character on Stardust was Yvaine, I think that's the right spelling, and I really like that.

  • I like it and wouldn't shorten it.  I do think it has a bit of "French maid" to it though.
  • I don't really like it. When I see it, it reminds me of "Yeti" even though I know that's not even close to how it's pronounced.
  • I like the name.

Around here it's pronounced Ya-vette with an emphasis on vette.

  • It is my middle name, and it is Ee-vette. I hate when someone says ya-vette. Honestly I used to hate it, but I don't mind it now - and it helps it is my middle name, so it isn't used that often anyway. I think if you don't want it shortened to Evie you just correct people.

  • I don't care for it, but I do like that it has family significance. It's not bad by any means, just not my cup o' tea.

I'm sitting here trying to think of the name of the maid in Clue. Was it Yvette? Anyway, BGG, I like it. I had a student named Yvette and her friends called her by her full name or Vette like Corvette.

  • I have a friend named Yvette. She is beautiful and smart so I think it's a great name! Also no one ever shortened it. We always call her Yvette.

I love this name.  It's pretty popular where I am from (because of the large French-speaking population).  Fantastic choice.

  • I really like Yvette.

I know a woman in my mom's generation with the name. She never went by Evie, but then again, Evie is kind of a newer trend. So it's entirely possible it will come up more often than it would have in past generations. But I agree, nicknames are optional, and leaving them out CAN be done. But only if your daughter goes along with it. She may like being one of many Evies in her preschool class. For an example of this, click this link:

Honestly, if I met a baby named Yvette these days, I would most likely think the parents were looking for a more unique name to use Evie as a nickname for. But i wouldn't start calling her Evie until the parents confirmed their desired nickname. But that's just me.

As for PPs' french maid comments, IMO pretty much any french feminine name can sound like a sexy french maid, if you say it with a thick enough accent.

  • This is my SIL's name.  For the longest time I thought it was spelled Evette, until I actually saw someone else spell it.  My own ignorance, I guess, but I would expect others might make that same mistake.  Also, I've never heard anyone call her any kind of nn like vette or evie, my DH call's her why-vette just to be a PITA, but that's what brothers do.

  • I know an Yvette... interesting, pretty name! I prefer Yvonne, though. It's a little softer.
  • I like Yvette and Yvonne :)
