What type of diapers are you using for the newborn stage, the first few weeks and while the umbilical cord stump is still there? How many are you getting? Are you getting any disposable backups for those first few weeks? In case you go through more CD's than you have and cannot do laundry fast enough?
Re: Question for CD Moms
I bought 2 dozen Bummis organic cotton prefolds and 4 Thirsties Duo Wraps (I plan on getting 2 more covers).
I am thinking that even though I wrote on my registry that we are using cloth diapers that someone will give us disposable diapers anyways.. so I will just use those for backups if needed.
We are just doing disposables. My husband is 100% on board with CDing, but is nervous about having "too much" on our plates at first. He joined Amazon Mom, used the coupons from Parenting magazines, etc. and bought enough newborn diapers to last well into when the BGs should fit. We will donate whatever we don't use. This isn't stopping me from pining over some fitteds and covers.... :-)
I love this post - I am curious to know what everyone else is doing also..
I have 30 organic prefolds, 6 KL0's, & 4 Thirsties Duo covers (size 1).
I plan to CD exclusively. (If I can avoid it, I'm going to make it so my baby never wears a disposable diaper.) I think we have enough to always get by. Luckily I have a wonderful DH that is just as excited about CDing as I am, and is more than willing to help with laundry.
I can't wait till my baby fits his OS diapers! I am so excited to use them.
We have GMD Workhorse Fitteds (8), GMD newborn prefolds (24) and newborn covers (6) for the newborn phase.
I need to start immediately so I "don't know any better"
8 NB GMD Workhorse Diapers
10 SM GMD Workhorse Diapers
12 NB GMD Prefolds
26 SM GMD Prefolds
5 SM BG 3.0
3 NB Prowrap Covers
2 SM Thirsties Covers
2 Thirsties Duo Wraps Sz 1
He has been measuring pretty big, so I'm trying to cover all bases by getting more in SM than NB. I don't plan on using disposables at all, so I made sure I have enough to do laundry (I hope) about every two days, or at least every other day.
ETA: I forgot to mention the fleece liners for a stay-dry feel in the prefolds, and disposable liners for the meconium stage.
Same here.
I just found this list of acronyms that looks pretty good: https://www.diaperswappers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=194852
Hope this helps! I'm still figuring them out too, when in doubt type the acronym then "diaper" into google (i.e. KLO diaper) and it should come up with something!
how many do you mean by "one package"? what sort of size package?
I would think a package of 20 newborn diapers would be plenty. My goddaughter only pooped meconium for about a week after birth.
Here is what I have purchased and what I am registered for. It is just a copy and paste from my stash list which includes the listed weight ranges for my reference.
Newborn:
12 KL0 snaps (5-15 lbs)
7 Lil Joeys (6-12 lbs)
2 Bummis Super Brite aplix (4-9 lbs)
4 Thirsties Duo Size 1 Snaps (6-18)
4 BG XS (6-12 lbs)
1 Small Happy Hempy (up to 12 lbs)
1 Mini Happy Heiny (4-16 lbs)
1 Goodmama nb
12 newborn prefolds (5-10 lbs)
12 small prefolds (10-15 lbs)
I have heard that this isn't necessary. From what I understand, meconium is tarry and sticky, but it is completely washable. Let me see if I can find the link...
Wow, some of you are stocked up! I've only just started buying and most of what I have are one size pockets (Kawaii and FB) that I don't think will fit for a while. I want to do prefolds in the first few weeks. I haven't bought any yet, but I did get 5 Zookie covers in newborn. In addition to the prefolds I think I'm going to get some hemp inserts to wrap them around and some wool soakers.
I forgot, I do have 3 small fitted diapers from a WAHM and a small Fuzzibuns. Plus I won some Econobum and Flips. I don't even know what they are or what size. lol They should be here soon.
We will be primarily going the disposable route until LO is born and we know how big or little he/she is. I was born at 3lbs 4oz and DH was a much larger baby at 8lbs Xoz. If LO is close to fitting the OS diapers, we'll stick to disposables. If LO is small, we'll order and use NB sized diapers.
I don't want to stock up on NB diapers that may only fit for a matter of days if we can avoid it.
You all inspired me. I finally ordered some prefolds, a couple of AIOs, and some hemp doublers. I also finally got a couple of wet bags.
My husband is going to freak out! lol I better lay off the shopping for the rest of the month.
Right now we have:
only 6 prefolds (but have registered for more)
6 fitteds
3 covers
8 lil joeys
4 newborn bugga bugga aio's
I registered for some grovia aio's, that i really want to try.
I'm sure we will have some disposables for back-ups but I would really like to just jump into the cding all the way!
I am planning on around 36 NB dipes to do laundry every other day. For just NB stage we have:
12 infant prefolds (Little Lions - in between GMD NB and SM size)
12 prefold fitteds (made from LL prefolds, custom. some are serged, some are t&t and velour lined)
6-8 other fitteds (including Swaddlebees NB Organic, Muttaqin, Bububebe)
2-4 AIOs/AI2s
8-10 PUL covers (including 6 Weehuggers size 1 which are adjustable to beyond NB)
4 woolies (2 soakers, 2 longies)
I'm not worried about meconium. It's tarry, yes, but washes out and stains less than EBF poop. I have flushable and fleece liners to use in the dipes.
If they ever come back in stock, we are going to use Kawaii Pure and Natural https://www.theluvyourbaby.com/pure-natural
We are getting BG one-size pockets for the rest of the time, and DH wanted a similar system for newborns.
I don't remember exact numbers since I'm using my newborn stash I had for my twins and I haven't sorted yet, but I have a combination of:
KL0's - We LOVED these!
Prefolds - Preemie and Newborn sized. Preemies have mostly been used as doublers for our BG OS's (as a tip!)
Thirsties and Bummis covers - Pretty sure I have xs and s in these.
Also, my SIL gave us her newborn stash of the itty bitty BG AIOs that I am so excited to use. They are so cute! Hopefully baby girl won't mind blue, lol.
I am sure we will also use disposables as needed. My little ones were done with meconium before we left the hospital, but I am sure we will end up with some newborn disposables from my SIL who is having a baby any day now, and we have some size 1's left over from before.

Surprise! due 2/23/17
The CD board also has a FAQ about CDing a NB.

ETA - It also has a glossary for the PP who asked.
