VBAC

Had my VBAC!

DS #1 was born by c-section because I was just unable to push him out.  I dilated completely after an induction at 40weeks, but just couldn't get him out.  The doctor believed he was face up, but wasn't positive.  He was 8lbs 5oz and 21 inches.

I went into labor with #2 at 37 weeks 3 days.  I was already 3cm the day prior to going into labor.  I arrived at the hospital at 7am and was 6cm and quickly got an epidural.  About 2 hours later my epidural started to fail, I was 8cm or so and feeling everything.  After trying to give me some extra meds they found out that my epidural had been pulled out slightly so it wasn't working correctly.

After multiple attempts to get a second epidural in, it finally worked and the pain was gone.  By noon I was completely dilated but they kept me sitting up as straight as possible for about an hour, they wanted to give him as much chance to drop as low as possible on his own.  I pushed for 3 hours with #1, so they were trying to avoid that.  Once I started to push it took about an hour, but it was successful!  DS #2 was 7lbs 2oz and 20 inches.  It was the most amazing experience ever and I'm so glad I didn't let anyone talk me out of trying for the VBAC.

The only bad thing was shortly after delivering I developed a spinal headache from the epidural.  They did a bloodpatch procedure the day after delivery that seemed to fix it so we went home 2 days after I delievered.  But shortly after getting home it started to come back and I ended up back in the hospital for a second procedure.  They kept me overnight on strict bedrest to make sure it worked.  Unfortunately the second one didn't work either so I had a third procedure that seems to have finally fixed it.  I had to spend almost 48 hours away from my new baby, but I'm finally home and feeling much better!

Re: Had my VBAC!

  • Congratulations on the new arrival and the VBAC!  I'm sorry that you had to be away from your baby early on, but I bet the rest of your recovery will be so much easier then after your first c-section.  Congrats again and enjoy spending time with your LO :)

  • Thank you for posting this! Your story gives me hope. I too had a c-section because I was unable to push my daughter. After 2 hours of pushing DD went into distress and I was rushed off to be sectioned. I now have hope that I will be able to do it next time as well. Thank you!!!
  • Congrats on the birth of your LO and on your VBAC!
