Name and website suggestions

DH and I are having a hard time coming up with names that we like.  I've been spending a lot of time lurking on the baby names board, but haven't seen any names that I just LOVE.

Can we post some names that we all like, if it doesn't help us, maybe it will help someone else?  Anyone have any name websites they love?

For us - our last name is short and also a color.  :)  So Scarlett and Forest are definitely out for us.  Haha.  It has to be at least 2 syllables.  We like unique, but not crazy unique names.  Having taught elementary school, I feel like I put a lot of the more common names with a face.  So I am hoping for something I haven't heard much.

Re: Name and website suggestions

  • This is the best I've got - for  a boy DH really likes Waylon.  Me, not my fave.  For a girl, I love the name Delilah.  DH does not.  :(  We both really like the name Roman for a boy, I still have to "test" it out... but we'll see.

I like this website too: https://www.namenerds.com/uucn/index.html

  • I am drawn mostly to older names that are not as common. You could look at the most popular names from the 60's, 50's, 40's or earlier.  I think I found lists on the social security website maybe???  My DD's name is Luella after my great grandma.

  • I love Luella!  Our niece's name is Ella, otherwise that would be on the list!  :)
  • DD was going to be Charlotte until I was about 25 weeks pg.  What about Jackson, but that's becoming more common...

  • I love the name Fiona... Unfortunately sounds too rhyme-y with DS name, Noah so can't use it if this baby is a girl. Also Vivienne, Lydia, Sienna.
    For boys: Donovan, Miles, Tate

  • Our top two girls names were Mallory and Noelle.  We had planned to use Alexandra as a middle name.  We also considered Tatiana.

We had a tough time with boys names.  We used the only two we could agree on, Justin and Tyler  :)  I personally loved the names Christian and Austin, can't think of the others right now.  DH and I just had a terrible time with names period.

ETA:  The only name website that I thought was pretty cool was nymbler.com.  You give it a couple of names that you like, and it comes back with suggestions.  I found it a helpful starting point.  You might like that one.

  • My cousins are all starting to have kids now and are using some unique names.  We have Barrett, Grayson, Tate, Jacques and Brennan.  We don't have many girls in our family yet, but on our list is Ellis (for a girl or boy), and Genevieve.

  • I definitely like more old fashioned names, often with a little family history in them. DD is Rita after my grandmother. My favorite name website is nameberry.com. They have some really cool lists.

  • Also, I love the pp's suggestions of Lydia and Noelle. I love the name Lydia. Old-fashioned, but very rarely used. I've only ever taught one Lydia.

  • I love classic, family names.  Maybe look through old family pictures and/or ask about family members names: first, middle and last!  I was surprised to find out some of my family members names and how much I liked them...I went back several generations to come up with some ideas.

For example, DD was named after my grandmother (who passed away while I was pregnant)...her name was Evelyn Lillian.  DD's middle name is Constance after DH's grandmother.  I loved all of three names but we didn't decide on the final combo until after DD was born (we were gender neutral.)

  • Mira, Paige, Leigh, and Piper were all names I really liked but DH shot them down.  I'm not so great with the boy names though, it's a good thing we had a girl!
