Parenting after a Loss

Talk to me re: cloth diapers

I'm considering doing cloth diapers over the summer/fall since I won't be working (that's a whole other post).

Talk to me about the pros/cons about cloth diapers, ladies!

Also, brands? Types? What do I need to know?

Re: Talk to me re: cloth diapers

  • We just started cloth diapering (for 2 wks now) and I love it!! I really wish we would have started right from the begining. I learned a lot from the ladies on the CD board. There is a FAQ link at the top of the board that answers a lot of questions and has diaper reviews.

I really suggest getting a trial. I ordered the customizable one from Modernclothdiapers.com and I am really happy I did. It helped us learn what works and doesn't for us. Jillian's Drawers also offers a trial, but it included diapers I knew we wouldn't want to use.

If you have any questions that the FAQ don't answer or trial questions, just let me know:) I have a lot of trial sites saved.

  • I agree with everything that Erin said.  The CD board helped me a ton, and I did the trial and Jillian's Drawers.  It was great to try a variety because I really had no idea what I would like.  I ended up liking Fuzzibunz and BumGenius the best as far as pockets, and I am really starting to love our Grovia AI2's, but we have a pretty big variety in our stash.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask!  I think there are quite a few ladies on this board that use CD's.

Oh, and just for the sake of trying to convince you, I have to say that a) it feels great to not have to ever buy a pack of diapers when I go to the store, b) it feels doubly great to be helping out the environment, and c) DD's little but looks so cute and comfy in the soft little CD's!  And, as an added bonus, we haven't had a single poop blowout yet, even after she started solids!

  • Pros: Helping the enviro

My LO heiny is free of nasty chemicals

    Saving money on diapers

    So cute...

Could help with potty training later on

Can use diapers for LO#2, if there is one

Can resell when no longer needed

    Cons:

I am amazed how much I wish for solid nugget poo, that I can just flush down the toilet. If it is soft poo. It is a mess.

More laundry (which I really don't mind)

You have to change them more frequently and he pees through his diapers more than he did (but my LO pees a lot!)

He can feel it when he is wet now and will try to take off the diaper himself

I started with fuzzibunz and then bought some bumgenius. I like the bumbenius a lot better. I also had to go with a hemp insert because DS is a grand pee-er. But I bought all of mine used and spent 170 on 18 diapers. I am not addicted to buying more. And that is really all I need. The ladies on the CD board have like 30-50 diapers. I do not need that much. (but, I also only CD during the day, we use sposies at night)

  • <-- You should check out the Cloth Diapering board.  They have a list of FAQs that will answer all your questions, and then some.

I will tell you that CDing is awesome.  I love it.

  • Pros: They're cute! Modern cloth diapers are pretty much just like sposies, except you wash them instead of throwing them away (i.e. NOT complicated to put on!). You never run out of diapers! No nasty chemicals on your baby's bum! You can sell them when you're done with them!

To me, the only "con" is two extra loads of laundry a week, and that doesn't bother me even a little bit.  I guess spraying poop into the toilet (though they usually "plop" off) is the worst part, and that doesn't really bother me either.

I really liked this website when I was learning about CDs:

    https://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/basics.htm

We use DiaperRite prefolds and Thirsties covers at home, and Thirsties Duo Diapers at daycare. At night, we use a sposie, b/c she pees a LOT and it was waking her up. Hopefully, as she gets bigger (and doesn't pee as much at night) we'll be able to go back to a Thirsties Duo Diaper with an extra insert.

I would also recommend doing a diaper trial to see what you like. Most online diaper stores have them.  I usually buy from www.diaperjunction.com
