rash on butt, but not diaper rash?

We spent a lot of time in the car today, so I'm hoping this was just something weird from sitting or something. DD has a rash on her bum that is hot to the touch, but definitely doesn't look like diaper rash (or even heat rash for that matter), and she was changed frequently today. I'm hoping it goes away on its own over night... any thoughts?

it doesn't look that way, but maybe? It's not raised at all... just a red blotch on the inside of her butt cheeks that's really warm to the touch.

  • put some baby powder on it.  I've seen it before and it has something to do with moisture and heat.

  • How long had you been out of the car when you still noticed it? My DS will get hot rash-like spots on his skin if he sleeps in the same position all night (or nap). It is usually gone within an hour, though. I have noticed it on his bottom before if his diaper was positioned weird on a long car ride.

  • depends on what diaper she was in- could be chemical burn.... some of the gels react with sweat or urine and cause a pretty nasty looking "rash"

I would just neosporin the area and pray it goes away.

  • Is it tiny red dots just on the butt cheeks? If so..it's folluculitis (I'm a pediatric dermatology PA). It's common from sitting in bath tubs (from bacteria), tight pants, and sitting on the butt long. it's a mild bacterial infection of the hair follicles. Put some OTC antibotic cream like Polysporin or Bacitracin on 2x day.
