What would you do with an extra $30K a year?

DH is going in for a review this afternoon and his former boss said that he should ask for a $30K/year raise (UHHHHHH Yeah, RIGHT!).

So of course DH and I got to daydreaming last night about what we would use that money towards (we don't really think it will happen - far from it - but it's fun to dream, right?).

What would do with an extra $30K per year?

  • travel! I used to all the time, but I havent even been on an airplane since I got married (not even for our honeymoon!) I miss it and want to travel with my family.

It would also make buying a house a lot easier :)

  • Drop 1/3 into the house, 1/3 a year into kids college funds, 1/3 savings (CDs/investments)
    Mama to Z - 5.5 years, G - 3.5 years, & M - 1.5 years.
  • Savings, investment, retirement.  I'm frugal to the bone...and want to retire at 60 (same year this baby will graduate high school...)

  • I would put some toward putting a bigger down payment on our new house, some in B's savings, some in retirement, and set aside a bit for fun money. :)
  • I?m an accountant. I?m practical. So this might be borning and I'm assuming this is a continuing income increase, not a bonus:

I would have enough in 3 to 4 years to do our planned remodel in cash.  And according to my amortization table (yes it?s on my flash drive), I could then pay off the mortgage by 2021.  46, dream house, no mortgage, higher income?  I?m sensing early retirement for me (my luck, I?d get the 30k raise, not DH so maybe not) and therefore ability to afford any university my child could get into.  Maybe even medical school.  No pressure!

  • - some into retirement

    - some into Lila's savings

    - some into a fund for a downpayment so we can move someday

    - ditch DH's beater station wagon and get a new (probably used) car

    - and after a year or two of all that, put $5k into a new wardrobe for myself.  I'm in dire need.  And it ain't gonna happen with our current income.  :sob:

That's $13,000 less than I will be making when I go back to work, assuming I get a job this fall. (And no I am not being tacky, my salary is a matter of public record. Anyone can go look it up!)

So my answer to that question is FINALLY LIVE AGAIN! We won't be counting every stinking penny, living pay check to pay check. We will be able to pay off debt and regrow our nest egg. We will be able to go on family vacations, buy clothes, get another car. It is going to be so awesone (minus the working part)!

  • Well after the tax man took his third Sad I would probably try to save part for education, DH would want some for his car fund, I want some for the house fund and bigger picture I want to save for a remodel/expansion we have talked about.

  • Add to retirement fund, add to savings, add to M's college fund and add extra payments to the mortgage.

Yep, me too, we'd live a lot more comfortably than we do now...instead of just saving we could pay down debt, vacations and so on.
