NBR: medical peeps - ? about records

Does anyone know - is there a certain amount of time a physician's office (in Ohio) is required to keep your records?  I'm googling but not coming up with anything...

I need to get my hands on (paper) prenatal records (at the office I still go to!!) and the office manager says she 'thinks' they've been destroyed.... I think she's being lazy and doesn't want to dig through archives.

I wouldn't normally make a stink but it's extremely important I get these...  Something really neat is going on - a fancy schmancy doctor in Chicago called us personally and asked for them.  She's working on a study dealing with our heart condition and could only find 20 something participants that meet the criteria - from the whole country - and I can add 3 more (my kiddos!)  If she finds what she thinks she will it will mean major stuff for families like ours.  I would really like to help!

So, I'm gonna be super peeved if they destroyed the records of my first two pregnancies.

  • For pediatric records they are kept until the child turns age of 25. For adults they are kept for 7 years. Have you contacted the hospital where you delievered?

  • I'm not a medical expert, but I found this guide to be very helpful.  I don't know if it will gain you access, but I think if you request it in writing, they have to research and determine if the records still exist, and then they have to furnish copies to you.

  • Thanks ladies!

Oooh Katie - that is helpful!  I'll be writing today - so they at least have to look - I'm not accepting her 'I don't think we have them' as the final word.

I just talked to someone else in the other office (same docs different location - where they actually store the paper records) and she said they have records from the 80's - they don't destroy.

    Thanks!!!!!

  • I have no advice or idea...

I just wanted to say that is AMAZING!!! How incredible!!! I hope you are able to get what you need.

  • When I was in 7th grade I was dx with scoliosis and had to see an ortho and have lots of x-rays, etc, etc, etc.  3.5 years ago I was able to get a copy of those x-rays from the ortho office.  I definitely wouldn't buy that they have already destroyed them.  That sounds like an exciting venture!  Good luck!!!!
