Q: Returning to work right after discharge?

I have no maternity leave left so any time I take off once Kevin comes home will be either paid time off (vacation) or unpaid FMLA leave (at least it's job protected).  My manager today offered me a third option, work part time from home.

Much of what I do is spreadsheets, email and a few phone calls based.  I don't need to be in the office for anything.  I'm just not sure returning to work part time two weeks after discharge is feasible.

What have you done?  Was it good or bad?

Thank you!

  • Do you have family who can come over and help you with LO? If so, I would maybe take your boss up on this offer, see how it works out, then maybe see if you can start working home more often.

I never had the option to work part time after DD was released. Although I did several weeks with her, before I had to return full time. I hope others can comment. Good luck with your decision.

Yes, my mom would be able to watch him at my house while I worked. I just talked to DH about it and he thinks it's a great opportunity.

BTW - I love the hat your daughter is wearing in that picture.

That's great that your family is willing to help.

  • It sucks to be honest. I went back to work 2.5 weeks after my c-section because I knew it would a long haul and I would rather use my time for when they were home. I am now on intermittent FMLA leave and work most weeks but take tiem off for our never ending follow up appts. I stayed home a week with Sophia and for Ella I stayed home a few days. It was a hard decision but we needed the money because I was out of paid time and because they were so sick and little I honestly dont know what this next year will hold for us and I want to be prepared and have the time.

  • If your mom is able to help and you feel that it is a good option I would try the part time work from home.

I was in school when ds was born and we decided I would stay home.  As long as we're on budget we will be able to pay off the loans I have.  But I don't have family that could help out.  Good Luck!

  • I think that is a good option. I'm doing this as well since I want an additional 2 weeks of maternity leave for his time in the NICU. Hope it works out for you!

  • I was lucky to be able to take an extended unpaid leave of absence when my LO was born. We were so unsure of his future, whether he'd even make it, and I was a wreck. I couldn't see myself working and not being at his bedside, but I also didn't want to quit my job and then if he didn't make it, be also without a job. I feel so fortunate to have had this option. It also gave us a trial run, so to speak, of living on only my husband's income and thus we decided months later that it would be best for us if I didn't return to work.

Your part time from home option seems like it would at least give you a chance to try things out and see what ends up working best for you and your family. Good luck. These are hard decisions.
