I'm no help. I agree that they're expensive, but I think the quality support in their sneakers is worth it at Stride Rite. I get Mia's school shoes (her sneakers) there, and occasionally will pick up a sandal or dressier shoe if they have something on deep discount.
For the most part, though, I get her sandals and dressy shoes at Target. They have a shorter life span and are worn less frequently, so I don't need high quality in those.
We get a lot of DDs shoes at the outlets- she is wearing Merrells from the outlet to school today. I get her fitted @ Stride Rite or Nordstrom and then take that info elsewhere to buy good shoes for less money.
I watch the flash sale sites too- I have bought DD Keens on sale through ruelala.
Ditto FIA - I get Ella's everyday shoes - sneakers from StrideRite - they last about 4-6 months so far, but they get worn almost every day so its worth it to me. More cute shoes, I'll get from Target for 15/pair. Kohl's has a StrideRite off brand that's a little cheaper - maybe 20-25 instead of 40-50 @ SR. Pennys and Sears have cute kids shoes.
I've gotten a few from the flash sites, babysteals, zulily, totsy, gilt, hautelook, etc (let me know on FB if you need invites to any of these) I check them every day. I've also gotten a few at target.
we get most of his at stride rite, because DS has wide feet and unfortunately a lot of places don't carry wide sizes. which is too bad, a lot of times I will see a cute pair at ON or Target but I don't even bother b/c his fat little marshmallow feet won't fit in them.

We had to get wides for awhile, but now Ella can wear normal shoes! Its nice!

We had the exact same problem so I ended up at Tiny Toes on Main St in Bel Air. The ones I got were $40, but the had a huge clearance section in the back that was BOGO, they just didn't have his size.
Payless has a SR brand too that's more in the $10-15 range, its called Step Rite or Stride Well, something that has either Stride or Rite in it but isn't Stride Rite. I believe they have wide sizes too but I haven't had to look for them, so I"m not 100% sure.
Other then those, we get shoes at Target or Old Navy.
