    When pronounced this way, it's one of my all time favorite girl names.  Unfortunately, the only reason it has come to my attention is because my neighbor's just named their daughter Helena - she was just born in Oct.  I really do like it, though!!

    We pronounce my daughter's name Hel-LEE-na, as in the town of St. Helena in northern California. Love this name, but if you are thinking of using it, be prepared to correct people a lot.

    That's my fear, too! It seems there are a variety of acceptable ways to pronounce it.

    I say Helen-ah (like the city). I've also heard Hell-ee-nah. I really like this name, but it is tricky due to the pronunciation issues.

    True. My in-laws still mispronounce my daughter's name every once in a while! I have spent 30+ years being an Ashleigh though, so I'm used to correcting people. I don't mind it, but the pronunciation is DEFINITELY not intuitive.

    I know a nun with the name Helena.  Hers is pronounced Heh-LEE-nah.

    It varies. Right now I'm doing the first one (Helen-uh).

     

    But either is fine, and if I met someone and they told me, "it's pronounced X" I would remember and be able to do it. But I think there are some people who would constantly mispronounce it. Which isn't necessarily a reason not to use it IMO. 

     

    Edit: I've never met a heLEEnuh, but HeLAYnuh seems perfectly fine to me.
