Two Under 2

2u1 - What do I get the new baby?

*Lurking from 3-6

My brother's DD #2 will be born this April, just two weeks before his DD #1's first birthday.

I have no idea what to get the new baby. Is there anything in particular that you guys wish you had/hadn't received, with two so close in age? They have the basics and I'm hoping to spend around $200 but I just have no idea! I've asked them of course (to no avail), but thought I'd ask for your input, seeing as you've all been there before. I'm hoping to make it a little personal but I know I'm running out of time, so any suggestions would be great.

TIA!

Re: 2u1 - What do I get the new baby?

  • I don't have 2u1, but the only thing I can think of that we need in that price range, even with 2u2, is another convertible carseat. We're using DD's infant seat for LO #2, but once he/she outgrows that in the spring, we'll need a second convertible, since DD will likely still be rear-facing at that time (she's a peanut, I highly doubt she'll hit the weight limit before she's 3, she's only 20lbs now). If they plan to rear-face to age 2 as recommended, they'll need a convertible for the new baby.

ETA: Now that I think of it, we're also looking to buy a video monitor, but that will probably come out around $250 with the second monitor thing.

  • YOu don't really need a whole lot. A double stroller is nice, but you dont absolutely need it, especially in the beginning when you can easily wear the baby in a carrier. I think a good baby carrier so you can wear baby is essential with 2 close in age-it helps you chase the older one while holding the LO.

An extra crib/crib mattress, some new nipples for bottles (if you're bottle feeding), some clothes if baby is the opposite sex is probably all you'll really need.

  • Maybe you could them a nice carrier (Beco, Ergo, etc) so that she can carry the new baby around and still be hands free. I am going to have to have 2u2 and have been putting off getting one because they tend to be a bit pricey.

Another suggestion might be diapers, lots of newborn diapers!! When I had DD everyone bought us diapers, I don't think I had to get new ones til she was like 4 weeks old. So, that was a nice luxury.

Lastly, if there is a place near you that does pre-made meals (or that you can go and prepare them there and bring them home to freeze) that would be a nice gift. We have something here called Dream Dinners that I do now, and it is so nice to just pull something out and make when I get home from work.

     HTH.

  • A double stroller???
  • Thanks ladies! One month left to brain storm :)
  • The only things we needed were a crib, car seats...and not really anything else.

A baby carrier would have been wonderful.  In the early days, I wore DS a LOT.  I would suggest an Ergo or a BabyHawk Mei Tai, or even a Moby.  If you got them the Ergo, you would need the newborn insert with it as well.

Maybe a baby blanket for the second little one?  There are some awesome places on Etsy you can get custom blankets.

Maybe you could get something for LO #1 so she feels like she gets a special gift as well?
