another sleep question....naps

DD is not a napper.  She is capable of napping for decent lengths of time because she'll nap for 2-2.5 hours in her car seat in the am if we are out.  At home it's a crapshoot.  I thought we had a break through when she slept 2 hours on her belly, but haven't had the same luck since.  She sleeps pretty well at night (swaddled in her crib).  She goes down between 8 and 9, typically gets up between 3 and 4 to nurse and then will go back down for a few more hours.  Any words of wisdom or should I just start accepting that perhaps she just doesn't like to nap?  I can't wrap my head around this being the case because by mid afternoon she looks exhausted.  What kind of naps should I expect her to take at 2.5 months?  I don't at all remember what DS was like at this age.  TIA!

Re: another sleep question....naps

  • At 2.5 half months I feel like Nicholas was napping/sleeping more than he was awake. He has always been an exceptionally good sleeper though so I dont know if this is the norm but at 1 year old he still naps for at least 3 hours a day so I would except at least that in a 2.5 year old.

  • At 2.5 months DS was going in 2-3 hour cycles.  Eat, poop, sleep. So he was taking several short naps, but he also was only going 4 hours at night. Definitely asleep more than he was awake.

  • DS was not a great napper....  In hindsight, I think if we had really tweaked his schedule more (maybe dropped back his nap time or something), we might have had more success.  The other thing I think that made a difference when we finally got him to consistently nap (not gonna lie.. it was like 8-9 mos), I put him down at the same.exact.time.  every day.
  • Cerys was BF and would eat every 3 hours pretty much on the dot- she'd wake up, cry, get changed, eat stay alert for maybe 20 minutes (long enough to wet a diaper) then fall asleep again- sometimes getting back on the breast as she did it.  It was that exact cycle til around 4 months.  Then she started to be more alert and awake.

I want to say it wasn't until 5-6 months that she was on a real schedule though and even then her nights went through shifts.

  • Justin was a terrible napper.  He was not on any kind of regular nap schedule at all at 2.5 months, and I think it was only when he started STTN at 7 months that he napped with any consistency.  Even then, he was a morning napper only, and clearly needed naps in the afternoon, but they rarely if ever happened.  He moved his nap to afternoon around a year old, and still naps then.

Tyler has always been a great napper.  I close his blinds and rock him and play white noise, and have done this since he was about 2 months old.

Honestly, I think it depends on the kid.  But I think I did things better with Tyler.  He didn't necessarily nap at the same time daily, but his naps followed his feedings, and I was consistent about how I put him down.  He got on a regular schedule around 4 months old (the 2-3-4 method).

  • C was never and still isn't a good Napper but he has pretty much sttn except to nurse once or twice so I just figured that was a good trade-off. Good sleeper for poor Napper! Sometimes he will nap for a few hours on the weekend and. We can't believe it!
