Houston Babies

Plane trip with 2 under 2

My husband and I are flying to Boston in July with our son (who will be 23 months) and daughter (who will be approximately 3 months).  I think that we should just buy an infant fare ticket for my son so we can have the three seats and not have two lap kids for an almost 4 hour flight.  It will likely be on Continental.  Are you able to purchase infant fare tickets online or do you have to do it over the phone?  Does anyone have an idea of the cost compared to a regular priced ticket?  Thank you for any feedback!

Re: Plane trip with 2 under 2

  • I would definitely buy a 3rd seat so you can have a whole row for your family. We pretty much only fly Southwest in and out of Houston and Philly, so I don't know specifics about Continental. I thought a ticket cost what a ticket cost no matter who it was for, but I could definitely be wrong. Either way, I'd say springing for a 3rd seat is smart.

Don't know how much you have flown with your little guy before, but if he will watch a movie, I'd say a portable DVD player is well worth the investment. Also, lots of stickers and snacks help us survive our flights.

Congrats on having a little girl! They're tons of fun :)

  • Loading the player...
  • No such thing as an toddler fare...its the full price!  A seat is a seat to them regardless of who's sitting in it!   SUCKS, but since you've got your second I think three seats is the way to go!

One thing that kept my DD (3 when we took our first flight) entertained on flight was one of those mess free marker coloring books.   I gave it to her as we were taking off to keep her distracted for take off and she colored for a good part of the flight!  I even wrapped it up so it was like an extra special surprise.

  • Definitely buy a third ticket! It'll be so helpful for you to have a whole row to yourself, especially for a flight to Boston. Four hours would feel like forever with two lap kiddos. I will be doing the same thing with my two this summer, likely flying to Boston as well.

It'll cost the same as an adult's ticket.

  • Thank you for the feedback!  I think we will spring for the 3rd ticket for sure.  Katy - congrats to you too!
  • They only offer infant fares on international flights :(...  We always buy a 3rd seat and take an entire row.  It's so much easier that way.  Even if we can't book a row, someone will always trade with us.  We've found a portable DVD player and lots and lots of snacks are key!
