Surnames as FN

Because of the post below and I am just confused on why some think surnames (Not Cohen, I get the point of that one) for FN are weird.  In my area, a lot of people name their child a surname out of respect for someone that has past on.  For example, we named my son Marshall after the last name of a relative that has passed.  Also, I have some friends who name their children after the mothers maiden name. For example name a little boy Vaughn or Hamilton...

And to be honest I like surnames as first names.....

(forgive any typos I am on my phone)

Re: Surnames as FN

  • I don't mind them in moderation. There are some surnames-as-first-names that make me gag... Madison, Addison, Jackson...

  • i LOVE surnames as first names.  my husband really wants to name a boy with the first name being my maiden name.  i just wish it sounded better with his last name.
  • I also like surnames as first names.  My sister named my nephew our maiden name and it is sooo cute.

  • I don't find it odd at all. I think there are certain surnames that don't lend themselves to be good first names because of pronunciation or spelling issues, but generally speaking, I'm a fan.

  • I also quite like many of them...my son technically has a surname (Kane) and our boy name this time was Nash. However, I think this trend has reached overkill status with names like Jackson, Carter, Carson, Parker, Sawyer etc... But, eh, whatevs. I still like many of them, albeit the lesser-used ones :) I really like when they're used to honor family!!
  • I think like anything, it's okay in moderation. However, I think there are quite a bit of overkill on the surname front. I like the idea of using family names, but honestly sometimes I feel bad for the kid with some of the choices.

    I agree, and I am 100% pro-using family/meaningful names.

I start rolling my eyes when I can't tell if I'm at the playground or in the middle of a meeting of medieval craftsmen ? Sawyer, Carter, Mason, Chandler, Tanner, Fletcher, Archer, Cooper, Thatcher, Taylor, Collier, Fuller, Hooper, Porter, etc.

  • They aren't "weird," I just don't like them. Especially not for girls.
  • I love surnames as first names. My son's name is a surname and it's not a fmaily name or anything (and none of the ones mentioned). We just really like it.

I don't know why people think they are weird. I think it's weird that people think it's weird.  Pretty soon there will be no names that people like.

ITA. Though I think if you are going to use a surname in a name its best served in a middle name. Maybe I know too many people with long polish last names, but I can't imagine saddling a kid with even my maiden (though my cousins have my maiden as their middle).

  • I just don't like them. They don't feel like "real" names. There's something that seems particularly American about this craze. I would never consider Rivero or Hernandez or Sarmiento or any of the other surnames in my family as first names and I have a hard time imagining anyone in Latin America doing so.

  • Totally agree with you!  There are a ton of names out there that people don't realize are actually surnames: Tyler, Taylor, Thomas, Martin, etc.

I strongly dislike using surnames as first names. I don't understand the appeal. I agree with pp that it doesn't seem like a "real" name. It just sounds like a last name. The only exception is if it's a family name otherwise I don't get it.
