Baby Names

Opinions on unique name please!

Backstory:  LO will be named for my grandmother Valeria.  We are team green, so we need to pick a boy and a girl name.  The tradition is to pick a similar name to the person being honored, but not use the exact same name.  We're all set if it's a girl...her middle name will be Valerie.

Boy is tough.  Our top contender is Valour.  What do you think?  I don't love it, but it does have meaning.  She was an army nurse, so the name ties in well.  We purposely picked the Brittish spelling due to her background.  Let me have it!

If you hate Valour, please suggest other boys' names that start with Val (that aren't Valentine or Valentin, since DH nixed those).

Re: Opinions on unique name please!

  • Would Valour be the middle name?  I think it would be fine in that spot but not a fan of it for a first name.  I can't think of any other boy names that start with Val yet.

Lerato, could be another choice, perhaps?

  • I actually like Valour as a middle name.

    Some other ideas:

    Valerius, Valerian, Velario

You could also just use Val.

Names that end in val: Percival, Orval

    GL!

  • I actually really like Valerian.  I also came across Valdemar, Valiant, Valin and Valko.

Valdemar sounds awfully close to Voldemort to me.  I would be wary of doing that to a kid, or an adult for that matter.  I think Harry Potter is going to be around for a long time, so I wouldn't do it. The others seem ok to me though.  I personally like Valour, especially with the history behind it.

  • Thanks everyone. Vale is on our short list. The only concern is that it sounds less like Valeria. Valiant is a good one, too. This would be the middle name. Glad that no one hates it, but it's good to see more suggestions.

I think Valour in the mn spot is just fine.

  • I'm not a fan (although I like Valerian!) but as a middle name it gets a free pass from me.

Valdemar sounds awfully close to Voldemort to me.

Valdemar is also the name of a fantasy world/series created by Mercedes Lackey, so in addition to the "Voldemort" association, it would likely get comments from readers of adult fantasy.

Honestly, as a mn I like it. My g-gma's name was Valeria as well so I'm digging the connection with Valour. The Army history really adds to that as well. :)

  • My dad had a cousin named Valmour
  • How are you going to pronounce Valeria? I may be wrong, but in my mind it sounds like malaria with a V. NMS, but how about Vala (pronounced Vay-la)? For a boy, Valin... or Valor (the our looks a little too fancy for a boy IMHO, but IDK).

    Good luck!
