High-Risk Pregnancy

Blood clots & baby aspirin

Can anyone tell me about your experiences being placed on baby aspirin for blood clots and/or clotting disorders?

I was diagnosed last week with multiple blood clots in superficial veins.  Without testing to see whether I might have a blood clotting disorder, the on-call OB (mine wasn't available) wants me to take a baby aspirin daily until 20 weeks.  I miscarried in September and I'm worried taking aspirin might increase my chances of miscarrying this pregnancy.  I'm also worried that, because I clotted in a superficial vein, I have a greater likelihood of clotting in a more dangerous one.  Does the OBs instructions sound reasonable, or should I insist on a blood test first?  I don't particularly care for the on-call OB, so I don't know if that's clouding my judgement.

Re: Blood clots & baby aspirin

  • the baby aspirin should help prevent against clotting...and miscarriage...not cause it.  I also take a baby aspirin a day for a clotting disorder.  I would also ask about being tested though if it were me.  Maybe call your regular OB and see what she has to say.

    Good luck!

  • Yes baby aspirin works! I had 2 previous m/c and they were both due to blood clotting problems. I was put on baby aspirin before I even got pregnant and I am taking it through 20 weeks. I got a blood test at 6wks and she said it was a good thing I was put on it so early. I am at 14 wks and feeling great with no problems! Good Luck!

  • Why only through 20 weeks? Why not throughout the whole pregnancy? I'm still taking mine with, I thought, no end in sight.

The Dr didn't say, but from what I read by googling, it has something to do with potential damage to the baby's heart valves.

  • Are they going to do any testing for genetic disorders? If I were you, I would push for this. I have Factor V Leiden (homozygous) and am on both aspirin and Lovenox. They way it has been explained to me, the Lovenox is to make sure I don't get clots and the baby aspirin is to prevent clots in the placenta. Depending on what is causing your superficial clots, the aspirin may or may not help prevent future clots and you could be at risk for more serious clots. Push for the testing!
TTC for 3 years. Finally successful after 5 IUIs and 2 cycles of IVF. Our amazing twins were born 5 weeks early on 8/16/11. Found out April 2012 that our di/di twins are ID.

Absolutely - I will insist on it, especially since this my 3rd clot in the same leg in 2.5 years. My regular OB returns Monday and will review my chart. I have a regular appointment scheduled the week after (11 wks), so I will definitely be pushing for testing. Thanks!

If you've had three clots in that amount of time I'm wondering why you aren't on Lovenox plus the baby aspirin.  I had a deep vein thrombosis and am on Lovenox.  Pregnancy in general increases your clotting risk and like you, I would be worried about developing a clot in a deeper vein.

Like everyone else said, baby aspirin can actually help prevent a miscarriage so I think you're good there.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

    This Cluttered Life

  • I have Factor V heterozygous which unfortunately they found out after my 1st pregnancy resulted in no fetal heart beat at 13 wks in Oct. Chromosomal testing was normal which led them to test me for a blood clotting disorder. I tested positive and now am 11 wks pregnant nd have been taking 1 baby aspirin a day and 40 mg lovenox everyday since week 6. This disorder has to be the blame for my first pregnancy loss Crying. But so far everything is going perfectly!
