Do you have St. Patty's traditions?

I have seen a few posts on FB this morning about decking the house out from a leprechauns visit and I thought that was too cute.

I cook corned beef & cabbage and make Sean's mom's recipe for Champ (Belfast tradition of mashed potatoes with green onions and a pool of butter) and we have it with rye bread and a pint of Guinness. I am about to get that going now and so looking forward to dinner.

Thinking I might do something cute next yr when E is older.

What are your St. Patty's traditions?

  • When K is older I think I'll do something cute like leave a pot of gold for her to find or something cute like that.

We don't celebrate St. Patrick's Day. We don't like corned beef and cabbage and I don't drink beer so we sit this one out. My husband might have a Guiness when he gets home, but that's it.

  • I know I am in a VERY small minority here, but I HATE St. Patrick's day and don't do anything to acknowledge it - and don't plan to for Toodle. But, I'm not remotely Irish and I live in Chicago where St. Patrick's day means thousands of extremely drunk morons (90% of whom aren't Irish either) wandering the streets at 10am in stupid antennae with shamrocks on them, so I'm jaded. I just don't get the allure. I know people like to get drunk, but as an adult, can't you have a beer whenever you'd like?

(Not at all addressed to em's traditions, as your family IS Irish and has clear cultural traditions behind the holiday, this is more directed at the majority of people who go crazy for it, most of whom have no idea what the holiday is about and just want to wear all green and get drunk).

I was actually making fun of a friend about this very thing this morning. I don't get it at all. He told me, "Because it is the greatest holiday!  There is no expectation of gifts or visiting relatives or long lines at the airports.  You put on some green and you walk around. Throw back a few drafts, get worked up over reels and pub songs.  What more could you ask for?"

I like the idea of doing something cute for K, but just because stores will have all the green, clover, pot of gold stuff.

  • My parents were both from Ireland so, while the holiday means absolutely nothing IN Ireland, I celebrate it here.  My Mom always kept us home from school and we went to the parade every year.  My Aunt would have tickets to watch from St. Patrick's Cathedral and we'd march behind my Mom's county banner at the end.  I'm making corned beef and cabbage for the first time today - again - not a meal I've ever eaten IN Ireland. lol

It's become a day both happy and sad for me. I'm still surprised how much I miss my parents who've both been dead for many years now.  We're going to a neighborhood parade this Saturday and then out to an Irish restaurant.  When Daniel is older I'll take him to the parade in the city.  I don't go in for the leprechaun crap though. :)
