Resuming exercise after c-section

If my baby is still breech I will be having a section on the 25th. I'm extremely active...now in my 38th week I'm still woking out 5 days/week (walking/running/strength). It's very depessing to me to have to wait possibly 6 weeks after to resume exercise. Does anyone have any experience with this? How soon after a c section did you start working out?

Re: Resuming exercise after c-section

  • I can definitely relate!  I had an unplanned c section about 6.5 weeks ago now.  I think some of it depends on how surgery goes for you.  It definitely is important to take it easy and not overdo it too soon.  That being said I took it easy until my 2 week check (not doing much more than daily activities, keeping lifting under 10 pounds)...but really up to that point I wasn't feeling up to doing tons!   at my 2 week check I was doing well and told I could start walking as much as I wanted and slowly ease into jogging, just make sure to be smart about it and take it slow to start (ie..dont start off with a long jog..start with short bits in your walk to see how it feels the next day :p )  just told to avoid core work and keep lifting to 30ish pounds.

    hope that helps!  good luck!

  • I had to have a c-section due to the same reason.  Normally it is 8 weeks after a section and 6 weeks after a vaginal birth.  Trust me...your incision will hurt to bad to want to work out right away.  I worked out 5 days a week while pregnant and was even at the gym the morning that I had my son.  I had to have my section a week earlier than scheduled b/c of my contractions starting.  I did work out 8 weeks after, but my stomach still hurt pretty bad and I had to take it really easy.  My stomach is still tender 7 1/2 months PP.  I was an avid exerciser, but my son is my #1 now so I am not as obsessed about it.  I'll get there when I get there and I am back down to my pre prego weight and already wearing all my normal clohes just by eating healthy and breastfeeding.

    Good luck though!

PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

  • I had an unplanned C-section and was walking within a week. Started jogging in about 5 weeks...but definitly be careful getting into it. Mentally I was Ready To GO! but physically I just wasn't there. Definitly overdid it a couple times and was in so much pain that it was a setback.

But being in shape prior certainly has helped me recover quickly. DS is 12 weeks old and I'm back up to jogging 4.5 miles.
