Hi everyone,
I plan on CD's my first when he/she gets here in September and I've been doing some research online. I think we're going with pocket diapers and I already have some cloth wipes.
My question is about laundry and forgive me if it's silly. Once you have taken off the dirty diaper, do you need to rinse it out, or do you throw it idirectly into the diaper pail/wet bag? Also what is the advantage of a wet bag over a pail? I like some of the wet bags I have seen on etsy...I think they would fit nicely into the decor of the room.
TIA!
Re: wet bag vs. diaper pail
some rinse right away, i admit, i'm lazy and don't do that. i'll rinse poops off right away with my diaper sprayer, but that's about it.
your best bet might be a pail, with a wet bag in it.
i at first used just my wet bag and hung it up in the bathroom, but the smell got out. so i just bought a cheap flip lid trash can, put the wet bag in there and no smells since.
Until you start solids, you can just put the diaper directly in the pail/bag, no need ro rinse. EBF or EFF poo is water soluable and will rinse away in your first cold wash cycle. After solids, you'll need to scrape/dunk/rinse before putting them in the pail. Or use flushable liners.
Pails vs. wetbags are a personal preference. Pails tend to be bigger than a lot of wetbags (though not all). Personally. I have 2 XXL MFD bags (Monkey Foot Designs on Etsy). I had her make them with 2 top snap straps so I can hang it from the side of the changing table. It takes up less space in DD's room that way.
Whether you go with pail linersand pail or wetbags, you will need 2 so you have one to use while the other is in the wash. You'll also need one or two small ones for the diaper bag.
HTH!
There are hanging wet bags, and then there are the wet bags that go in the diaper bag for dirties when you are out, that sort of confused me when I first started.
I really like having a diaper pail with a pail liner. I have a grovia one and another one I don't recommend. I got a cheap plastic tall kitchen trash can, and most pail liners are designed to fit them.
When DS was EBF we just took out any inserts and tossed it all into the pail. Once he started solids we would put flushable liners in his diaper and then when he pooped we just turned the diaper upside down over the toilet and that was it! Now that he poops more like 1x a day, I try and remember to stick a liner in his diaper at about the time I know he's going to poop and we usually have np. His poop is more plopable now so sometimes if he poops without a liner its np, we just invert the diaper over the toilet. IF its a messy one, I keep a stash of plastic knives in the bathroom and scrape it into the toilet. Some people have a diaper sprayer for this but if I bought one, it probably would never get installed! I then toss diaper and inserts into pail. On wash day I take the entire liner out of the pail and turn it inside out into the washer, and toss it in too.
Yep to everything last poster said about poops and washing vs. plopping. They will go thru a stage for about 2 months when you first intro solids (around 6 months) when their poop isn't "ploppable" and you will have to scrap it off the diaper, for that stage we used the disposible liners and they saved us a lot of nasty work. Now that DDs poops are solid we dont use liners and can usually just plop it off into the toilet with a little shake.
As for wet bags. DD has a ridciulously small nusery so we just got two Planet Wise Hanging Wet Bags and we alternate them in her room. We have a dresser that doubles as her changing table so we just attached one of those 3M Command Metal hooks to the end of her dresser and we hang the bag from that. It holds about 15 or so diapers and so far the hook has stayed on just fine for the last 8 months. We just toss them in the wash when we are doing laundry, and let them line dry afterwards, which is why it is good to have two you can alternate. We also have a couple of the Medium sized Bummis wet bags that have the looped handles that we send to daycare daily. They just hang the loop of the end of her crib so that they can toss diaps in throughout the day easily. Those bags only hold about 8 BG 4.0 max though.
