Pregnant after a Loss

How long does it take for your OB to call back?

It's been an hour and a half, and I know I'm just anxious because I'm having spotting, but it's annoying me.  I got to a practice that has 3 OBs and 5 midwives.  Usually you call and leave a message with reception and a nurse calls you back.  I was just wondering what your usual wait time is.  I supposed I should give it a bit longer before I become overbearing.

Re: How long does it take for your OB to call back?

  • Normally I wait anywhere from an hour to two hours. We have to go through the same procedure when we call. Normally a nurse calls back within that time. It is lunch time right now though, so maybe that's what is taking a while?

  • Mine prioritizes the calls that come in.  I've only called once so far (spotting) and it took them about 5 hours to do the initial call back (triage nurse).  I didn't hear back from an actual doctor until about 24 hours later.  I think if it were something more serious (cramping, worse spotting, pain) that they'd be better about it.  I go to a military hospital if that makes a difference. My non-mil doctor has taken anywhere from 1-5 hours....the 1 being when I called them saying I was pretty sure I'd m/c'd over the weekend with my previous pregnancy.

  • Typically no more then an hour, but I have waited 3 hours once. I would call back and leave another message or tell the receptionist you are spotting, they should go get someone right away or at least quickly. You mentioned mild back pain and light cramping so I would give them a nudge if you don't here back in another 30 minutes or so.

  • My OB office has a nurse whose main job duty (among other things) is to triage calls that come in from patients.  I've had to call three times and I've gotten a call back either within an hour and one time I was able to speak with her right away.

For me, when I'm freaking out and I feel like something is wrong, 90 minutes - 2 hours is usually my limit.

ETA - I should have clarified that when I call I never speak to an actual doc, it's always the nurse (which is fine with me).  My doctor will always address the issue the next time I come into the office.

  • Yep, hour or two here. We have to call the nurse line or my doctor's assistant if it's more urgent. I have only talked to the doctor on the phone once, usually it's just her assistant I talk to.

  • On the outgoing message, mine says calls will be returned by 6:30pm that day. The office closes to patients at 5, so I find that most of my call-backs have been between 5 and 6:30. Annoying.

  • It's been two hours now.  I have to go pick up DS at daycare now, and I'm worried that they will call right as I'm talking to his provider about his morning.  So annoying!  Anyway, thanks for the feedback, ladies!

  • It is between 20-30 mins if it's an emergency such as spotting I call the on-call doctor and get a call within 5 mins.
