Anyone Planning on Cloth Diapering?

I have been thinking about it for, well, way before I finally got pregnant. DH & I spoke about it last night, and we decided we are going to CD. And I know how early I am, but I want to buy some so bad! I've been checking out Fuzzibunz, BumGenius, and the Flip system. Anyone else here planning on CD? Or any momma's who already CD?

Best of luck to you, and again I have so much respect for moms who can CD!

  • 100% CD! I was CD and my mom loved it! We don't have a diaper service where I live but still I think the benefits are worth while!

  • We actually talked about this just yesterday!  We're going to do CDs as well, although DH wants to use a diaper service, and the cheapskate in me wants to launder them myself.  Something about throwing multiple diapers into the landfill every day was enough to convince me to go the CD route.  (Plus, I used to work as a housekeeper, and old cloth diapers make the best rags I've ever used! No joke!)

I'm still really ignorant of all the options, but someone recommended a lady nearby who does "cloth diaper education" and sells them through her home business, so I think I'll probably just have to pay her a visit.

In my googling yesterday, I found someone who really liked the BumGenius brand, though they sounded expensive at $17 each.  Surprise

  • I also want to CD! I am frugal and recycle just about everything I can, so CDing has a lot of appeal for me, because money and environmental stewardship.

My husband isn't so sure.  I showed him this site a while back (cart waaay before horse) and I think has come around to the idea.

  • I think that we might try to CD.  We will definitely use disposables when others may be around for diaper changing/when we are out for extended periods.

  • Yep! We cloth diaper DS exclusively too so we've got quite a bit of experience. We will primarily use Kissaluv 0s for the newborn stage, in addition to a few AIOs and prefolds. Then, this new kiddo will use DS's old diapers (once he/she is big enough to outgrow the nb diapers) which are primarily Bum Genius Elementals, although we really have a bit of everything. I did a blog post a while back that talked about the different styles of CDs... I'll post the link in a minute. I'm on my iPad and it'll take me a minute to find it..

$17 a diaper is nothing when you think of how much you spend on disposables.

Yep, we have 20+ BG Elementals which cost almost $24 each, but we are already saving money with DS. The next kiddo will not cost us any money in diapers!!
  • I'm really considering it. I'm a teacher, so I'm going to finish my last semester after having the baby, then be a SAHM. I think while I'm finishing the year, we'll do both since my friend who'll be watching the baby won't want to CD. When summer comes, I'll go to only CD-ing.

I don't know how correct that link is on disposables. I talked to a friend of mine that uses disposables on her 6 mo. old as well as her two older boys when they were in diapers, and she said her and her husband spent about $1200 a year on diapers.

I suggested it to my DH and he veto'd that right away. He said he didn't want to have to launder dirty diapers, he wants to just be able to toss it in the trash and he'll be home with the baby during the day when I go back to work. He works nights, I work days. So since he'll be watching the baby more when he/she is awake he has a big say in this one.

  • I really want to - and DH is almost on board.  I recently showed him gDiapers - i think the website is gdiapers.com.  They are a hybrid where you can use total cloth or you can use biodegradeble flushable inserts.  I feel like if DH hates the cloth, he can opt for the inserts.

Let me know if you find any more info about any other kinds!!!

  • I am definitely cloth diapering. I am not sure which ones to buy yet... but ill be doing some research on that in the near future. :)

  • Definitely. It's better for the environment, it's cheaper in the long run, and babies get less diaper rashes. Plus, you can get really cute diapers and diaper covers!
    image
  • I plan to. For two reasons. One is that I'm cheap, and the savings over time really appeal to me. And two is that I live in BFE, and I don't want to be running out of disposable diapers when it's a bad time to have to drive to the nearest store, which isn't near at all, to get diapers. We have bad winters. I like the idea of being self sufficient when it comes to diapers.

My husband was kind of sketchy on the idea of washing diapers but I reminded him that I do the laundry anyway, so it doesn't really matter to him, haha. I also remind him that on any given day, he's got cow poop on him, his clothes, his boots...and if he can deal with that, he'll be OK with baby poop.

My MIL thinks the "new" cloth diapering trend is crazy; since she had to CD her kids, and she hated all the swishing and disinfecting. I tried to tell her once how it's different now, and she wasn't having it, so I'm not disclosing to her that we'll be CD'ing, haha.

I have several friends who turn their noses up at CD'ing, but have never tried it....but my friends who did try it say they'd never go back to disposables. So I figure, it can't be that bad! Huh?

  • My current thought is to use cloth diapers, though I haven't seriously discussed it with DH.

The LO will be in daycare, though, so I suppose I'll have to do some research on whether it will be possible.

  • DH and I were just talking about this.  I have a friend who said to look on Craigslist for diapers.  By doing that, it saved her a lot of money.  It's so overwhelming at first with all the different options.  But the CD board has a great FAQ to help those to start researching!

  • We will be for sure.  We will wash them ourselves, no diaper services locally.  Although, I know it's silly, but I don't feel comfortable using a diaper service anyways.  You don't get back the same diapers, they just throw them all in together and you just get back the sizes you need, but they are not the exact ones you had before.  I know they're washed on super hot sanitizing cycles, but still, the idea makes me cringe.

I'm actually going to sew my own anyways :D  It's amazing how cheap it is if you look for deals on fabric.  I'm making a bunch of fitteds w/ covers for the newborn stage, then switching to a BG style one-size pocket that I have a pattern for. I'm so excited!

  • We use CDs with DD2 and will be using them with the new baby:)  I didn't start until she was 6mos old.  I never thought that I could ever use CDs with the washing and all the extra work!  Those of you on the fence about it I can say that it really is not any extra work!  My DD always had a red but no matter what disposables we used so thats why I made the switch.  So in almost 6 mos we have never had any rashes or other issues and she has a cute little fluffy butt now!! lol The CD board has a lot of info in the FAQ at the top of the page and that is where I started out.  Good Luck with whichever you choose:)

  • How great to see so many other moms planning to CD!  I definitely am.  I mentioned it to my MIL thinking she'd be happy about it, but she was talking about how difficult it is.  I think she has an old-fashioned idea of it in her mind, but once she sees the ones we get she'll be singing a different tune.  I tried to explain, but my Spanish is not up to snuff for that kind of discussion.

My sister has a huge stash and is going to send me most of her CDs (at least the newborn ones) as her youngest will be a year when mine is born.

What is it with men and poop!?  The first time he had to change the litter box (last week, the first time in 5 years!) he made such a scene about pulling his shirt up over his nose and holding his breath, the whole nine yards.  What a WIMP.

I keep telling him baby poo is going to smell way worse than cat poo, and he'll probably even get it ON him now and then.  He replies, "yeah, but that's different."

I swear he's going to be one of those dads who puts on a gas mask to change a diaper!

And you know whats sad? He's a plumber!! He deals with sh!t for a living! lol He keeps telling me he'll take home some gloves from work to change the baby with. Ugh. Men.

  • We CD DS part-time.  We were doing it full-time, but then I could not find a system for nighttime that he wouldn't pee through so we started using disposables for night time.  Then he started getting red at daycare (combination of build up on the diapers & maybe daycare not changing him frequently enough), so we switched to disposables there, too.  Now, he's mostly potty trained, so we use CDs at bedtime and we're using up the last few of a pack of sposies at daycare for naptime then will be using CDs for naps there again until he's fully PT.

For the next LO, I hope to CD full-time.  We only had prefolds for the newborn days with DS, so I plan to buy some AIOs, pockets or fitteds for newborn stage.  After that, we're pretty well set.  We have tons of BG OS pockets, BG organics (now elementals), haute pockets, a Rumparooz, some fitteds, GroBaby (now GroVia), gDiapers (I did not like these at all) and more, as well as two more sizes of prefolds.

These are some I'm drooling over:

    https://www.diaperjunction.com/rumparooz-lil-joey-newborn-aio-diaper.html#

They are some of the most adorable things I've ever seen!  I'll probably get a few of those, a few BG newborn AIOs and a few fitteds.   IDK, I may buy a couple more elementals, too because I really like them more than the OS pockets and we only have 4 of them. Our BGs are holding up pretty well after 3yrs of use, but the Haute Pockets aren't doing so well.  I may have to replace some of those over time.  We have such a huge stash though.  We really don't NEED any more diapers for after the newborn stage.

To those wondering about washing & all that.  It's really not a big deal.  With the amount of diapers we have, I think at the most, I was doing 2-3 extra loads of laundry per week.  Now it's down to 1.  Hanging to dry is great b/c the sun is great for removing stains (though some diapers like prefolds get pretty stiff).  In 3 yrs, I have swished 1 or 2 diapers & that wasn't even necessary.  It was actually messier than just plopping the poop and then putting them in the dry pail like usual.  And pockets and AIOs were made for DHs worried about using cloth.  If  you take on the responsibility of stuffing pockets and washing, it's really not much different for DH.  He'll have to plop poop, but really, you're supposed to do that with disposables anyway.

OK...this is getting very long.  Feel free to ask me questions about CDing. Wink

We used gDiapers with cloth inserts at first, but quickly switched and moved onto more regular cloth diapers. The gDiapers leaked like CRAZY, and after reading on cloth diaper boards, this seems to be the experience of just about everyone who has tried gDiapers and then compared them to something else.

You can get so many better types of diapers that won't leak for the same amount of money, or cheaper, so I would really suggest you look into some other types as well. If you like the hybrid type of CD, take a look at Bum Genius Flips. They work very similarily, but don't leak. Let me know if you have any questions. We have tried tons and tons of different brands and types/styles of diapers.

OMGGG. This exactly. DH and I have been married almost 3 years, and we have had my one cat the entire time, and fostered a million kitties, and now we have a 2nd. I went out of town for 10 days last year and he CLAIMS he kept the litter box clean the whole time. All I know is he cleaned it before I got home lol.

Last week he tried again because I told him I'm not supposed to do it. He didn't realize that after you dump it out you need to DISINFECT/wipe down the inside, and the top half (it's a covered box). It was so annoying that I just picked up some big rubber gloves, and doctor masks and have been doing it myself.

Lol!  I thought about that, but it's so fun to watch DH squirm!  And I've been really easy on him - I'm only asking him to scoop and then refill litter as necessary. No wiping or full box changes.  The only problem is he dumps the clumps in the bathroom trash so I keep having to nag him to take out the trash because it gets so stinky.
