Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When do you consider LO "sick" (daycare/childcare related)

Just curious.  When C woke up really congested this morning I was on the fence (see my seasonal allergy post).  Since it cleared up after he woke up a bit and I think it's more allergies than a sickness I took him to the babysitter.  I have a mandatory training class to extend one of my licenses for work and DH has a cuh-razy day too.  And MIL already had him over the weekend for our anniversary plus her normal Monday and Tuesday.  Obviously one of us would have stayed with him if needed but I made a judgment call that I'm pretty comfortable with...but if the babysitter called me now and said he was sick I'd feel awful.

Where do you draw the line?  Do you send them if they have a minor cold?  Do you wait until there's a fever?  Or do you just stay home if you even suspect they might be sick?

  • I would stay home is possible, but I know that is not always an option. The daycare C goes to has no fever rule, and if they have one at daycare they can't come back for 24 hours. So I just try to keep him home if he feels bad.

  • I'd say fever for sure. I won't send her if she has had a fever in the last 24 hours because that's the rule around here.

    As for anything else, I don't know. I haven't ever really had to make a judgment call yet. :/ Sophie has been congested and coughing for months now because of her dysphagia, so that just can't count for me, or I'd never go to work. Right now, she has bronchiolitis and pinkeye, so that is an automatic no go.

  • I only have a certain number of personal days, so unless he falls under a category in our day care's sick policy that would require him to stay home, he goes to daycare. So far, I've had to keep him home for projectile vomiting and a fever. If it happens at daycare, he can't go back the next day. There are obviously other illnesses that they list on their policy that would require you to keep LO home but I don't remember what they are.

  • It just depends.  If they have a fever, they stay home, no questions.  They both have colds right now, and DS1 was complaining of ear pain last night.  They both went to daycare today. I told daycare to call if he runs a fever or really seems to not feel well.  We will take DS1 to med check tonight.  If he really seems to not be feeling well, either myself, DH or my dad will stay home with him.

    Unfortunately, I only get a certain number of call-ins per year.  So, unless they are really not feeling well, or contagious, they have to go.  It's one of the 7,345 things I HATE about being a working mom.

  • I know that LO is going to get sick multiple times because he is in a daycare setting.  If I stayed home everytime he got sick I might as well not work.  He has had a cold for the past 10 days.  As long as he doesn't have a fever and is not vomiting I will bring him to daycare.  So if he has some mild diarrhea or a cold and no fever I still bring him to daycare.

    Luckily C isn't in daycare...it's my MIL, whom I totally trust and doesn't have any other kids around, or a neighbor who's wonderful with him and and laid back about a stuffy nose etc.  Her comment when DH dropped him off was that it was probably just because the weather changed.

    So I feel like he's in good hands but when he goes to the babysitter I don't want to get her little boy or the other 2 kids she watches sick, and of course I want him to have his momma if he NEEDS me.

    I know what you mean about wanting him to have his momma. I worked at the daycare C goes to and I remember parents dropping off and leaving very sick babies all day. I remember feeling so sorry for the them being there all day. Don't get me wrong I know people must work, but when you have a baby you know they "could" get sick.

  • If I can tell that W is feeling crappy I will stay home with her.  If she just has a stuffy nose then I will take her in. At our daycare the only time you can't bring them is if they have had a fever.  They must be fever free for 24 hours before they can return.  W was sick last week.  She got over her her fever the first day but had a bad cough and was feeling icky so she stayed home a few extra days even though she could technically go in.

  • I would also keep LO home if he was acting sick.  If he was not sleeping well, not drinking his bottles well and being fussy coupled with being sick then I would keep him home.  however, if he is his normal happy self with a stuffy nose and cough then I send him in.
  • I think a good rule is that you stay home for:

    1. A fever;

    2. Anything that you think requires a visit to the pedi; and

    3. Anything that makes LO feel rotten, although this last one may be negotiable if it's especially difficult to stay home or you're low on sick days (e.g., sometimes teething = rotten, but you can't always stay home for that).
