  At IKEA they have all sorts of combinations of bins like the one I posted. And they are not too expensive. We love ours! We have some in his room too! I made the picture labels and he can put all of his own toys away...it's awesome!

  I do a few things - 1st and most important, I do a really good purge of toys at least twice a year - in December and then sometime between March and June ( between their birthdays but it tends to be closer to June).  Anything that they don't play with, have grown to old for - goes in the donate or garage sale pile.  We keep our newer toys upstairs and then toys that they still like but have grown bored of go in the basement.  We basically have a huge playroom that gets messy but I have a shelf thing with some storage bins down there plus some cloth baskets for the toys down there.  In the living room, we have a huge plastic bucket that most of the stuff goes into.  The dollhouse stuff gets put into the dollhouse, the dolls go into the dollbed with any of their stuff and the doll strollers go next to the doll bed.  On the fireplace mantel (which we never use), I have a small metal bucket (check out the Target Easter baskets for some cute baskets that can be used for toys) for all the barbies and their stuff and then another mid sized basket for other small toys.  Games and puzzles go on 2 shelves on the china cabinet.  The girls each have a small basic wood toy box (also from Target) in their bedroom and all stuffed animals go into those.  As the girls have gotten older, I have started to move more and more toys into the basement and their rooms and I love it.  Oh, I have a small craft table with a Rubbermade unit to keep all the paper, stickers, markers,m etc.  It has 3 huge drawers.

  I use plastic crates that look like milk crates. You can get these at Target or walmart.  They are the perfect size that DS can handle himself, and they are stackable, and you can buy as little or many as you need, in different colors.

   

  also i rotate the toys, so most toys are put away in a closet with only a few out.

  When DS has outgrown  or is bored with a toy, I get  rid of it either by donating it or selling it. I don't like to keep ununsed things in the house.
