Playroom?

I guess this will depend on your house set up/how many kids you have but I'll ask anyway...

We are buying a new house and I'm trying to decide if we should put a playroom for the kids upstairs in the smallest bedroom, or downstairs in the finished basement.  If you have your playroom in these areas what are some pros and cons?

Thanks :)

Re: Playroom?

  • We don't have one, but I would say downstairs.

    1. Because there will be more space for them to run.

    2. Because when they're older you can just send them down there and it will be quieter than having them upstairs.

    3. It is more out of the way so if it gets messy, it'll be okay.

  • the house we put an offer on has an extra room upstairs and a finished basement.

We will have the playroom in the extra bedroom but I will probably have it be the biggest bedroom. That way I can shut the door on the mess if company stops by on a whim. I also like what my friend does and allows a few toys to come downstairs but they must be put away every night before bed.

I will have a corner of the basement have toys also so they aren't bringing them all the way down there but in the summer/warm months I don't want to send the kids to a basement that has minimal light b/c I don't want to be stuck down there all the time.

I also have a design plan for a playroom so I don't want my basement to be all kiddy decor when we want to entertain.

  • My vote is for the basement.  It's probably much larger than the bedroom and like Kbaby said, it's hidden and if it's messy no one will see it.

  • I think it depends if you plan on using the basement for entertaining.  If you can actually section off a room with walls & a door then the basement would be my pick, but if it's just an open corner of the basement and you plan on entertaining down there then I'd make the playroom the bedroom upstairs.

We are debating the same thing right now. We won't entertain in our basement so I think that's where we'll make the playroom.  Also, that's where all the kids go in our house now when we have family parties.

  • I would say basement.  In fact, that's part of the reason having a finished basement was a deal breaker when we were house hunting.  Keeps clutter to a minimum in the living room, the space people see right when they walk in the door.

  • We're getting ready to finish our basement and we're putting the playroom down there.  For me I just wanted a large open area that they can run around, especially in the winter when you can't go outside very often.  I considered making one of the bedrooms a playroom in the future, but I probably won't.  It's hard to really control the temperature upstairs, so on a hot day, it's pretty miserable and in the dead of winter, it's pretty cold.  Not to mention, we can make the basement a little more adult friendly too so we can still do our own thing while keeping an eye on the boys.
