Hello everyone! I would like some advice on how to get my LO to self-feed more often. He has fed himself with a bottle and sippy and I have seen him use his fingers for small pieces of food (Cheerios, puffs, etc), but he prefers not to. I have tried putting food on his tray and walking away, but he just flings it on the floor. He will, however, put larger pieces in his mouth (Gerber arrowroot cookies, Ritz crackers, etc) without choking on them.
I know all babies develop at their own pace, but how can I help him along? He is currently in daycare and I know they try to work with him. Developmentally he has reached all of his other milestones (we are almost walking). Maybe he is just a stubborn child.
Thanks!
Re: Need help with self-feeding
I wouldn't push it, it's def not because he CANT self feed, he just chooses not to right now for some reason! He clearly only wants to self feed if whatever you are giving him looks very enticing to him. Maybe try a couple tricks I used with DD, banana chunks rolled in crushed graham crackers (she STILL loves this), steamed soft chunks of sweet potato (this was her 1st finger food besides puffs), and small pieces of american cheese.....
GL, i'm sure he will eventually start doing this without you having to think about it so much!!
ooo sorry I don't have any different advice except like the PP said to not push it. He'll come around when he's ready.
We also started our DD with steamed soft chunks of sweet potato. It's still one of her favorites.
I LOVE the idea of banana chunks rolled in crushed graham crackers. What a great treat idea!
Our third addition is on their way!
