16 hr car trip with kids 13 months apart...tips/advice?

We are taking a vacation this summer and our destination is 16 hours away! DS who is 15 months right now (will be 18 months for the trip) is rear facing in his car seat. He is 23lbs and 30 inches. In our minivan we have them both in the captain chairs, but I'm wondering if it would be better if I put DS in the back forward facing so it would leave a captain chair open so I could sit back there if needed and entertain. But I'm a little worried about having him forward facing. WWYD?

Any advice/tips, anything I should get to help with the trip? TIA!

  • Honestly, we just did a 10 hour trip not too long ago (mine were 25 months and 10 months) and I think the best decision we made was to drive through the night!

We left around 6 which is about 2 hours before their bedtime. We brought our portable DVD player and they watched a movie before falling asleep. We wanted to get the bulk of the driving done during hours that DH and I would normally be awake anyway.

I would also keep your LO RF. :) Have a safe trip!

I would definitely keep him RFing.  We did a big trip last summer and our savior was the DVD player, me sitting in the 3rd row seat to entertain the RFing kiddo, and planning stops along the way to get out, stretch and run.  We hit bad weather along our trip so the McDonalds playland was our friend.  Snacks help a ton, as does having a bag filled with small toys to hand them to play with.

THIS!! Keep him RF. LEAVE AT BEDTIME. We put DS to "bed" in his carseat and then loaded him in the car (when he was still in the infant seat) when we had all the final things ready to go. We drove all night and he didn't wake up until we got to our destination 10.5 hours later. It was the best and worst idea ever. The travel with the baby was a piece of cake that way. The downside is that you're killer tired the next morning...lol. And some places you might not be able to check in at your destination for several hours, meaning you will have to kill some time, too. We've decided with two we are going to try leaving at 3am this time and hope they still have a good 6 hours of sleeping in the car. I think if we were driving 16 hours we would probably take at least a day and a half to do it so we didn't have to worry about being cooped up in the car all day...a night of baby sleep only lasts so long and you'll still have several hours in the car.

Oh! One more idea for the awake time: Do you have a DVD player in the car? Even with DS rear facing, he is able to see the screen on our DVD player (behind him) because there is a mirror on the headrest in front of him. He's only watched a movie once, but it kept him VERY well entertained.
