in home daycare question

We are looking at in home daycares for DS2.  We did a center with DS1 b/c we just prefer that but in this area (Maryland near DC) the cost for an infant in a center is $450-$500 PER WEEK!!!!  OMG!!!

So...clearly we can't afford that plus DS1 being in preschool.  I'm wondering what is typical for the amount of vacation in home providers take? sick time? how much of this is paid?  We interviewed one in home provider so far but I'd like to know what others do too.  And yes, I realize we are in a different area now but I like asking you ladies because I know you!  :)

ETA:  I'm really wondering about the whole paid vacation time b/c the person we interviewed takes 3 weeks of vacation per year plus 6 sick days.  I need to look at the contract but I think that is all paid time.  Is this typical?  It just seems like a lot of paid time off.

Re: in home daycare question

  • Oh wow...I pay my in-home daycare $115 for Wesley right now (per week), and will pay around $200 once #2 arrives. My DCP only takes a few federal holidays off (4th of July, Good Friday, Christmas, Thanksgiving, MLK Day), then has only been closed if her kid was having surgery (she plays basketball and has torn her rotator cuff or something and her ACL). I pay on a weekly basis, and there is no discount for days where she's closed - still a full week's cost. She hasn't been sick herself at all the entire time Wesley's been there, so I don't really have experience with sick days.

  • I had 3 home daycare's in Raleigh and each did something different.  The first had 2 weeks paid vacation and federal holidays.  She took some extra days and we never docked her pay (this was the reason we left).  The second and third ones only took the federal holidays and we didn't have to pay her if either took vacation.  We were okay with 2 weeks paid vacation but 3 weeks and 6 sick days is a little much.  We paid 175-180 per week here.
