I'm glad you posted this because I have been looking for some good books too. I am shocked that only ONE person has responded to this post. With all of the educated people on this board, 99% of them mothers, you'd think people are reading?
I haven't gotten past "What to Expect the First Year" ... but I would recommend it if you haven't been reading it! Hope this helps, wish I could be more help.
Well, I have bought a few books here and there over the years, but none that I loved and none that I read cover to cover. They were mainly different sleep ones that I scanned through and looked at the TOC to find what I was looking for and then only read that chapter. One of the Dr. Sears books I did read the most of though. I believe it was their sleep one.
What are you looking for? It sort of depends on parenting style and the age(s) you are looking for.
The main one that I have heard good things about, although I have never read is 1-2-3 magic, but that is not for babies..
I like reading mystery books while I pump. I could reco a few authors for those...
The more I think about it, the more I really do not know what I am looking for... I think mainly how to raise well rounded kids... specifically girls... I always complain about how my mom and dad how no clue what they were doing with raising me... everything from hygiene to what to do when a boy wants to you know...
I know you guys are looking for some suggestions here. I do not read parentings books. I did read pregnancy books and I did use Baby 411 when she was tiny but mostly I follow pedi's advice and use my best judgement. I do not follow any specific parenting technique or book. Just try your best to be honest and use good judgement and common sense is my basic principle. I did buy Our Babies, Ourselves bc it looked like an interesting read but never did follow through with reading it. Those in the book club know that is my MO.
Everything I know about parenting, I learned from the Bump.
J/K - Most of my more recent parenting book purchases have been related to the world of raising a toddler. I read a few when J was an infant. Of those, the ones that I would definitely recommend are the ones that Jersey told me about:
everything from hygiene to what to do when a boy wants to you know...
No i do not stink... i had really good friends who helped me through this, but it was def something that my parents should have taught me...
I went browsing at Borders during lunch since they have everything 30-50% off and I saw some of the books that you are talking about. Sadly, I do not remember exact titles and names. There was even a sex ed book with illustrations, but didn't think my husband would use that in talking to the older boys and I figured by the time I was ready to have that talk with DD, there might be a better book, so I didn't even pick it up.
I do remember though there were quite a few specifically for parenting daughters and dads and daughters also. FWIW, I was at the one in Mason.
I would reco browsing at a store and read a few random pages here and there to get a feel for the author and if you agree or think they are off their rocker.
My geometry teacher in high school was the only one who really addressed boys wanting to do stuff and all he said was that when a boy says "trust me" to run the other way. I know at least one other person on here went to my highschool, do you know who I am talking about? He was a trip.

The pedi recommended this to me at Kate's 15 month appointment. In fact, I just ordered it today off Amazon!

LOL No biggie, been there.
ETA: that it actually caused me to open your post. I usually skip over parenting book posts.
