Exclusive breastfeeding & PG?

Hi, I am sure this quesiton has been asked a million times, but I am new to this board...just wondering how long it has taken women who are breastfeeding exclusively (and not using birth control) to get pregnant again?

My baby is 5 months old and I am ready for another one at any time...but my La Leche League leader said she didn't even get her period back until her daughter was 14 months old!

Re: Exclusive breastfeeding & PG?

  • i did not get my period back until LO was 13 months and I only got it I because I weaned completely at 11.5 months (it took 6 weeks after weaning completely to get my period). Luckily I got pg my first cycle after that (it took almost a year to get pg with my first).

It all depends though because some women who ebf get their period while still ebf'ing.

  • 3.5 months.  But I got my period back just shy of eight weeks after DD1.  I was EBFing, including multiple times at night, so I was surprised.  I got my period back just FIVE weeks after the second one was born, despite EBFing.

  • 3.5 months. But I'm the freak that never got any period first. I was EBF around the clock. It's unusual that you get of before the "warning period" but it's possible.

  • I got my first period about 2 months after DS was born, and got pregnant while EBF. I weaned at 10 months when already 2.5 months pregnant
  • Was EBF and got my period back a week before 6 months pp.  Got pregnant apparently four cycles later (they were really short at first).  We weren't trying.

  • I got my cycles back before we started solid foods; EBF until 6 months and AF showed at 6 months. I still haven't had a cycle since DD, so we'll see how long it is this time.

  • AF came back at 7-8 months with both kids (I got PG the next cycle).  I never had supply issues, but my supply TANKED when I got pg (surprise).  It killed me to wean-- something to keep in mind if you planed to EBF for 12+ months.
  • i didn't get AF until 2 weeks after i'd weaned #1. i got KU that cycle.

#2 is 3 months- i EBf & i have yet to have AF. i have a feeling i won't get it until i wean again.

  • I can't answer your question because when we conceived my DD my DS was 4 months old and I did not breastfeed, however I just read an article that said that studies show that your liklihood of having twins is higher if you're breastfeeding. Not sure the reasoning behind that.

Yeah, I only bled for two weeks or less both times.

  • I think I had one period after DD, and then I found out I was pregnant with DS when DD was six months old. :-) And I was exclusively BF.
