Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

15 mth old saying only one word

Hi,

I have a 15mth old daugher and she just says dada.. dada for everything. At her 15 mth check up her Dr. was suprised she only knew one word..she should be saying three. She understand what everything is, where everythign is but just wont vocalize. Her dr. recommended that we get in her face and repeat words over and over.  Anyone else like this? I'm worried but not too worried. Any tips for moms that have gone through the same things? Thanks.

  • 15 months is still too early to be really worried. Lo would say very little, then all of a sudden he started with like 10 words. as long as he understands and has no hearing issues, you should see a big change soon

  • As long as she understands what you're saying to her, I wouldn't worry too much.

  • DS is 15 months as well and only has one word: go. And that's VERY recent. He said "dada" a handful of times a few months ago, but nothing since.

Eh, I was worried about it at one point, but I've kinda gotten over it. We read ALL the time, I'm constantly narrating our day, and he has a definite understanding of a lot of words (points to body parts, points to animals, etc). He was advanced in gross motor skills, so I'm just assuming that his language skills took a backseat. He'll talk when he's ready.

He also does 5 or 6 signs. I don't even sign to him anymore -- he just does to me.

  • At 15 months DS didn't have any words, tons of sounds but no actual words.  He's 17 months now and just starting to have a few "no, ball, dada, ba (for balloon).  I was slightly concerned at 15 months but am seeing clear progress now.  I would try and not stress too much, like everything it seems like one day they just get it.

  • my DD just turned 14 months and all she says is DADA for everything.  I think she says doe for No and deah (sounds like yeah) for Bad.  (we always say bad kitty to the cat, haha).  But that is about it.  She makes a sound that sounds like a high pitch hello, but shes not really saying hello.  She understands everything we say and even listens when we tell her to do something.  I'm not worried about it.  I don't think you have anything to worry about either. :)
  • "Getting in her face" does not sound like useful advice.  Either give her more time and see what happens, or get an evaluation through EI.  Meanwhile, keep talking to her, reading to her, and encouraging her to communicate.  My DS only had 2 or 3 words at 15 months.  Now he is talking up a storm, and I can't even count how many words he says.  He also uses a lot of signs and other means to communicate his wants, needs, thoughts, etc.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • Getting in LO's face is probably not the best way to word it.  Being close to them and having them watch your mouth move, is supposed to help though.

P is 16 months, she said what I think was no, no the other night.  But hasn't repeated it since.  At our 15 month appt our pedi was worried to, she only has one word, mumumum but it's for everything.  He said even if she had 2-3 words that she KNEW what they meant he wouldn't have been worried.  They wanted her to have 5 words and know 5 body parts.

We are working on the body parts, she will point to them, but obviously won't say them.  We are starting ST soon, and after 18 months if she's still not progressing we will add more ST.

    I'm not super worried..but mainly because of her CP i don't know if it's a muscle/tone problem.

  • DD will be 15 months in a few days and only really has two words.  She says "Dadda" ALL the time and once and awhile she says "Bobo" (the dog).  I am not too concerned because like you DD knows what I am talking about.  She seems to understand a lot.  She knows what I mean when I say it is "time to go," "outside," "eat," "shoes," "come here," "cookie," etc., etc.

I will be interested to see what her pedi says though.  At her 9 month appointment the pedi asked me if DD was says things like "up up," "milk," etc. yet.  Confused  She doesn't even say them yet.

  • My dd will be 19 months this weekend and she says dada, mama and that's about it.  She uses sign language well, for more and all done and she communicates very well with the sign language and pointing and she understands what we tell her.  We try to get her to say more words, but I think she chooses not to.  At her 18 month check up the pediatrician said that she wants her to be talking more so she wants to recommend a speech pathologist or therapist.  But before you can see them they require a hearing test.

We go for the hearing test today.  I am not concerned because like I said, she communicates fine, we can understand each other, she just chooses not to use her words.  Since her 18 month appointment she has been trying to say more words and now says please, up and some others.

So I would not be concerned, it is still early and as long as she responds to you, understands you and is interactive with you and others.  Each child develops at their own pace.  Our dd does not go to daycare, which I think plays a role in this too b/c while she plays with kids at the park and our friends kids every now and then she is not around a lot of children a lot of the time.

  • Oh lord.  PLEASE don't worry.  DS didn't really start talking until this month!  Now there is no stopping him.

  • Thank you ladies for the feedback.

I'll just keep talking to her and repeating words and will not worry. :)

  • DS is almost 19 months and no clear words yet.  I wouldn't worry.  Our pedi didn't seem too worried since DS points to things he knows and can follow some directions.
