Moms of Toddlers

What type of bed is your toddler in?  If they are in a crib still, what type of bed do you plan to put them in after the crib?

Jacob is still in his crib, but I am not sure if I should convert it to a toddler bed or just go ahead and make it a full size.  Or maybe scrap all of it and buy a twin.

Re: Moms of Toddlers

  • We moved Charlie to a toddler bed (converted crib) last summer when he started trying to climb out of the crib. Seeing him straddling the side was enough to put me over the anxiety cliff. We'll probably convert it to the full-sized bed this summer, he's starting to get kind of long to be comfortable.

  • Brady moved into a big boy bed right after Aubrey was born.   We moved him to a twin with a removable mesh rail on one side and the wall on the other.  We would have converted him to a full size bed if his crib was a convertible one, but since it wasn't and we had a spare twin, we moved him to that.  He loves it.
  • We moved Ethan to a twin last summer so at about 2.5.  His crib got recalled otherwise he would have gone to a full, but we already had DH's old twin bed and mattress.  One side is against a wall, and we actually never used a guardrail.  We put a pillow under the fitted sheet on the one open side, which works the same as those foam travel guards you can buy.

  • Whenever we move Leah, we'll go to a straight twin bed. I wanted a toddler bed so I'd have a chance to use that dang quilt that came with her crib bedding, but by the time we move her, she'll be older than 3 and it seems pointless to bother with a toddler bed.

  • Alex was out of his converted crib in the fall to make room for Cameron. He is in a full now and loves it. We just gave him our guest bedroom suit.

  • My son is in a twin-sized racecar bed. My daughter (who just turned 2) is still in her crib. I'm not sure yet what kind of bed I will put her in. Most likely a twin, but maybe full-sized because we have one already:)

  • We got DD a toddler bed when we moved into the new house. Were actually going to go straight to a twin, but my parents wanted to get her a "cute kid bed" for her 2nd birthday present, so... there ya go.

At their house, she still naps in her crib.

If it's a convertible (our crib wasn't), I would probably do a toddler bed for now, then convert it to the full later.
  • We got the Disney Princess toddler bed. Yep, I am that mom. She is getting used to it. Some nights/naps are better than others. Like Jersey, a couple of times seeing her try to go over and one discussion that included a horror story about a toddler with2 broken arms from trying to climb out was enough for us to switch, even if it meant that she was able to get out of her room and not sleep through the night for a few weeks.
  • We moved DD from crib to a queen (I know! but that's what size our extra bed is).  She never tried to climb out of the crib but we wanted to transition her well before new baby showed up (about 3 weeks from now) so she didnt think she got kicked out by the baby.  She fell out once but never again so we didnt end up getting rails.  We also have one side against the wall and use a pillow on the other side of her.

I say skip the toddler bed.  It's just another transition you'll have to go through later.

  • We moved Cedric to the 'Toy Story' toddler bed, he loves it.  If we had more room we probably would of just put him into his bigger bed that he is to get eventually (it is a double) and add sides.  But the toddler bed, of his favorite characters, is working great.  He loves it and is close to the ground for him to get in and out of.

  • We moved Justin straight to a twin bed when he turned 3.  He slept great in the crib, but he was just too big for it anymore, he had a hard time getting comfortable (he's pretty tall).

We didn't have a convertible crib for him, so that wasn't an option for us.  We got a twin in lieu of having to buy two beds for him.

Tyler's crib is a convertible, and we will likely just go to the full when he is ready to move to it.  I don't see the reason to spend more money if the bed converts to a full, unless you never intend to use it that way.  Twin size mattresses and sheets are obviously a lot cheaper than full size.  :)
