Soy Milk or Milk-Milk

So we are about to transition from Formula to milk and I am wondering if I should do soy-mailk or cow's milk.

DD is on Soy Formula because she had a lot of gas issues.  (I was told this is very common in preemies.)  DD does NOT have a milk allergy.  She eats whole milk yogurt pretty much daily, and loves it.

So I am debating on if I should start with soy milk when we transition becuase it will taste more like her formula, or if I should skip the soy and go straight to cow's milk.

DH suggested doing soy milk warm in her bottles and cows milk cold in her sippy.  That sounds like a good compromise, but since neither of us are milk drinked (soy or cow's) I am worried that we'd end up wasting a lot.

Of course, I'm planning on running this by our doctor, but Evie's well baby visit got bumped.  (They had an office fire!)  Our doc gave us her personal cell to call in case of an emergency, but "what kind of milk should I buy" doesn't seem dire enough for me to bother her with!

Re: Soy Milk or Milk-Milk

  • I would do cow's milk or if you are worried about allergy problems coconut or hemp milk.  We try to limit our soy intake as it really isn't that good for you.  (This is something that I just learned about a year ago or so and was quite shocked as soy is in EVERYTHING).

I actually just came across this article the other day but I haven't had a chance to finish reading it yet:

(My son and I are dairy free and I must say that coconut milk is delicious!)

  • Not exactly the same situation, but I'll share my experience:

My DD had a stomach bug a week before she turned 1 and we were told to switch her to soy formula and limit dairy until she was over the bug.  At her 12 month check-up we we told to switch to soy milk once we ran out of the formula (only bought a very small can) for the remainder of the stomach bug recovery period and then switch to cow's milk.

We kept her on the soy milk for a couple of weeks and then slowly started adding in cow's milk because she wasn't a fan of it at all at first.

  • If there isn't an allergy or sensitivity, I think I would just stick with cow's milk.  I'm pretty sure regular formula and cow's milk taste nothing alike, but kids seem to transition okay anyway, so I'm not sure that I'd worry too much about the taste difference.

In fact, I'm betting formula tastes like ass_ whether it's soy or not, so she'll probably dig on the cow's milk ;)

  • I would definitely offer cow's milk.  Soy is good in small quantities, but you probably won't want to give it daily.

I agree-it stinks in powder form!
