  • My OB recommended the Mirena between the two. The Paraguard is hormone free and last for 10 years. The Mirena is not hormone free and only lasts for 5 years. HOWEVER according to my OB the Paraguard gives you heavier bleeding and causes a heavy lining.

  • I really wanted to get Mirena, but Cigna insurance does not cover it at all. UGH. So it would cost me $850 plus the insertion fee. My dr said to look into paragard to see if my insurance covered that one instead, but of coarse not.

I have heard Mirena is better and has less side effects.

  • I am going again with the Paraguard and have had it in the past. My reasons are it's good for 10 years and it's nn hormonal. My body does not do well with hormonal birth control. I didn't have any of the bad sid affects that others tend to get like the heavy bleeding, mine atually got better.

  • I want something hormone-free and I'm strongly considering the Paragard.

  • My Dr. strongly suggested Paragaurd. Mirena is a larger IUD and it depends on your Dr. or practice how comfortable they are inserting the Mirena (according to my Dr. ). Within the group of Dr.'s my practice belongs to there are about 120 doctors total and there have been 5 patients with serious complications with Mirena. I'm going with Paragaurd for that reason and because its hormone free. As with anything thats fairly new people will tend to stick with what they know - thats the impression I get from my Dr. He, and the other Dr's in the practice I attend, are more familiar with the paragaurd and with its insertion.
