GERD moms please come in

Ok I'm trying to get to the bottom of J's projectile vomiting he has been doing lately and why he is so fussy when he is awake.  Yes he has had a cold but its been a running nose until this cough showed up.  Well now I have noticed he doesn't really cough unless he has just eaten.  I feel like he eats and then gets sort of congested and then goes into a coughing gagging fit, then loses his whole bottle out his mouth and nose!  He will also just start screaming for no reason and has only been sleeping if elevated or on our shoulder.  My question is would the coughing and vomiting thing have to have started before now or could it just start now and that with the other things are making me notice?

Re: GERD moms please come in

  • So DD did not ever get diagnosed with GERD but she was a projectile vomiter. Almost every single time I fed her starting at 3 weeks and finally done by 6 months. She never cried though so it wasn't an acid thing. If he's crying associated w/ the vomiting I think that's more indicative of reflux but I'm def. no expert and I know other mom's are and your ped. good luck! So frustrating!

  • I would definitely talk to your doctor about it (and you may have already).  My daughter did almost the same thing... coughing after eating and a lot of spitting up (not projectile though) and she ended up diagnosed with possible reflux and dysphagia (she has problems swallowing).  She ended up having to be on thickener in all of her liquids and that helped a lot.

  • This was Maddy to a T.  Hers started earlier, but sometimes it can take awhile to present.

I'd definately talk to your pediatrician about the possibilities of GERD.

  • Symptoms don't often start for a few weeks so I think you've definitely got a reflux case there. It sounds like it to me. Both of my kids turned around in three days on Zantac.

  • Thanks ladies!  Sometimes I feel like I'm going crazy but I just don't remember Cruz being this way.  I have a call in now to see how much cereal to try in the bottle (she had mentioned trying this at our 2 week appt) and we go in on friday so maybe I can give this a go and maybe if its not better ask for some zantac then.

  • You could see if they would call in the Zantac. Then you'd have a couple days of it before your appt and might know if it's helping.

  • My girls are both silent aspirators but, to me, it sounds like he might be a regular aspirator.  I would NOT do cereal until you can rule this out.  My girls had a terrible time swallowing and would always have milk coming out their nose and mouth.  It wasn't until a trip to Childrens where they both had streaming x-rays of their swallowing that we found that the milk was going in their lungs.  My girls did not cough it up though, but it sounds like he might be trying to.  The milk in the lungs can/will cause illness/infection.  So, adding cereal to that mix isn't ideal.  Now both of my girls use thickener (Simply Thick) in their bottles.  We did not start to feed Katie until she was 8 months and Khloe didn't start until 2 weeks ago.  They must master suck/swallow before moving on and when they do the food must be pretty thick.  I'd ask your Dr about it.

Amy has a good point - you might just talk to the doctor first....

  • To add to what others have said - is he in pain?  Does he cry after vomiting/eating?  Is he starting to show signs that he doesn't want to eat (turning his head away at feedings)??  These are also signs of reflux.
