Has Anyone had to pay for Home O2?

My husband is switching jobs and the insurance is the same with one major difference - he now has 100% coverage for durable medical equipment and that will drop to $2500 in coverage under his new company.  Kevin will likely be discharged in April on oxygen - and we expect him to remain on it for months to a year (maybe more - his lungs are really terrible).

Has anyone had to pay for home oxygen out of pocket?  I'm trying to get an estimate on how much this will cost (I don't think Medicaid will pick up the difference for us because we make (in their opinion - LOL!) too much money).

  • Have you guys looked into putting him on disability and recieving SSI benefits? Medicaid would cover the deductable for you guys. i would ask your NICU social worker about it, especially if he is going to be on it for a while. I;m not sure of your exact story, but I know that some babies qualify for it automatically.

I was going to say this as well. Babies before a certain gestational age (I think it is 30 weeks) automatically qualify regardless of the parent's income.

  • Thanks!  Hopefully he'll qualify but if not, we'll do whatever needs to be done (obviously!).
  • Ella was on medicaid type program for our state due to Low Birth Weight. If Kevin is low birthweight and on disability then his insurance with medicaid will continue for the first year despite your income. If that is the case, then it is 100% covered and we have not gotten any bills. PM if you have more questions.
