Would you be mad at someone if they said they hate your dog's breed?

This girl I eat lunch with in our lunch group totally did this to me yesterday and I have to say it really pissed me off and now I don't want to be nice to her.  I was telling a funny story about my dog and she was like "Oh, I hate those kinds of dogs".  I should have said something to her right when it happened, but I didn't want to make it a big deal.  Now it's bothering me every time I see her...

I just think it's so rude!  It's like me saying, "Oh, I hate the car you drive.  I think it's a POS!"

  • I don't care what people think of my car but with a dog/ pet, I would. I mean it's ok for them not to like it but why say it? It's not like you were forcing her to be around the dog or anything.
  • I guess I'm kind of used to it because I grew up with pittbulls and rotties, so most people don't like those breeds. It bugs me, but I just brush it off because people shouldn't judge a dog by the breed, but they do and I can't change that.

  • There are some breeds of dogs that I hate. DH hates my favorite breed, which is what I had when I was younger. Some people told me they hate mini dachshunds, which is what we have now.

    I just shrug it off.

Our dog is a pittbull and that's why it bothers me.  She gave no story for why she didn't like them.  I feel like if you're going to make an ignorant comment, you better be able to back it up.  I know they aren't a popular breed right now and a lot of people don't like them, but I would never say that to someone that owned one and that is an advocate for them.

It's just so funny to me because we always talk at lunch about how our students don't filter their thoughts.  They say how they think or feel about anything.  She hates when her students do that.  Seems a little hypocritical to me...

  • I would not get mad but people who say those kinds of things are definitely rude. Did you ask if they liked that kind of breed? No? Then these people need to shut up. (I have had a few people say that to me. I love my dogs. I was asked what breed they were and I'd get, "Oh I hate those kinds of dogs." ::blink blink:: Okay thennn...)

Get used to it then. people don't like pitts.

Honestly, if they gave them a shot they'd see that pitts are extremely nice dogs-they want to please humans so much.  Most of them are wonderful animals, they just have a bad rep. I know I'm not going to make people change their views on pitts (or other so called "bully breeds") so I just love them that much more, to make up for all the haters.

Yeah, it was rude and I'd be annoyed. I know people that are like this. They don't mean any harm, but it's still rude.

Haha I like your siggy pic!  How cute!  That's how I felt when she said that to me! LOL

  • I have a mini dachshund too!  Lots of people say they hate little dogs.  But ya know what, it doesn't crush/hurt me when I have a 10 pound dog walk over me.  When the 80 pound dog wants to do the same, it's hard to stop them.

You should've asked why, cause them she'd come back with a stereotype of course and you could shove that in her face :)

Oh and at first I thought it was going to say "Would you be mad if someone said they hated your dog's breath"  and I was thinking, ugh I hate my dog's breath too LOL

  • I agree that it's rude, just like it's rude to tell someone that you hate the dress she's wearing, the car he drives, the decor in her home, etc. If they ask, that's a different story. Or if they tell me they're thinking of getting something, I might tell them why I don't like it.

I don't think you should get that upset about it. Now you know she's either a rude person or having a bad day (and is rude on bad days). If she says other stuff in the future, you can remember it just shows that she's rude and it doesn't reflect on you.

  • My dog is a mutt, so you would have to hate Labs, Goldens, Bassets and Springer Spaniels. And that's just impossible.

In short- no, unless they were assuming a rottie or a pit bull were going to rip their face off. That kind of breed discrimination drives me batty when Chihuahua's are the evil spawn breed.

I love pitts and think they get a way bad rap so I get why you feel annoyed...but with all the misinformation out there you have to expect that as the owner of a pitt.  I'd look at it as an opportunity to educate someone if they're receptive, and if not there's not much you can do.  I think the uneducated comment would bother me MORE as an owner of a pitt but because it was based on misinformation.  It's not like they said your Yorkie is ugly.  They're afraid of your dog and have a misconception about him or her.  Even though it's mostly based on misunderstanding, it's not mean-spirited necessarily the way a comment might be about another breed.

Very true!!  I just didn't appreciate how "in my face" it felt.  Next time she does this, I'll have to set her straight on the truth about these dogs.  I can't wait to go home and give my pitt a big kiss and hug! :)

  • I would have been pretty irritated too, "hate:" is a pretty strong word and I think she used poor judgement and def. could have used something a bit less harsh. I would probably not invite her to happy hour with me but I wouldn't make the work environment weirrd by saying something at this point.

  • I have a Presa Canario (spanish mastiff) and people are immediately turned off by it because he is such a big dog but in reality I have the biggest teddy bear of a dog. He reminds me of the big guy from the Green Mile. He's huge but wouldn't hurt a fly.

A pitbull ate my kitten when I was younger, it was my neighbor's dog. I don't hate them, I'm just a tiny bit scared of them. You're right, it's wrong to judge them all in the same way.

  • I hate dogs. I still have friends. I wouldn't worry about it.

Haha I have a yorkie. She's great though. But I got her from the pound, I didn't pay an outrageous amount of money for her. Not that I'm against paying for a dog. Most people tend to give me the side eye when I say she is a tea cup yorkie. They automatically assume I paid like 2 grand for her.

And I'm afraid of big dogs. I don't hate them, I'm just small and they always man handle me.

  • My H tackled a pitbull once.  True story.  It was when we first started dating.  The pit attacked my H's elderly dog (who was part-pit himself) at the park.  My H tackled the pit and held him off long enough for the pit's owner to drag him (the pit) away.  He (my H) wasn't hurt, but his dog needed stitches.  So brave, but so stupid.

Oh and I totally thought the last word of this post's title was going to be "breath," too.

  • I would think it's odd that she said that, but I wouldn't be mad.  I tend to not be bothered when people just put their foot in their mouth because we've all been there.  It wasn't a personal attack, most likely something just said on a whim without much thought.  If she had actually criticized my specific dog, then I would be pissed.

  • You've just gotta brush it off.  She's likely stereotyping a breed and it would nothing to do with your particular dog.  Her ignorance is her issue.  Don't feel like you have to defend your dog against her stupidity.

Dude, fwiw, I've got a chihuahua and a pitbull - two breeds that people tend to have very strong (albeit lame) opinions about.  My dogs are awesome ;-)

  • Pitbull owner here too and no, it doesn't bother me. I'm used to it. I do always ask why and try to educate if it's for an ignorant reason. But there are several dog breeds that I just don't like - I would never own a Shar Pei, for instance.

Meh, that was really rude of your friend but sadly you have to expect it owning a pittie.  I've found the best way to handle it is to take care of my dog and train him to be well behaved so he breaks the stereotype.  We're still working on that part but his behavior quirks are just related to him being young, he's not in the least bit scary or aggressive.  If anything he'd lick to you to death.

Ha, I thought she was going to say "breath" too! One of my dogs likes to get right up in peoples faces and burp. She's totally classy. My answer is no, I wouldn't get offended. It's a little blunt for my taste but I'd say to each his own.
  • I have two chihuahuas. Everyone assumes all chis are yappy and skittish but my girls aren't they love everyone and everything.

I will say I'm not a fan of pitts.  I had my girls in the front yard once while I was doing some gardening when a pitt appeared out of no where and attacked my elderly dog.   I ran  up and started kicking it and trying to get the demon dog off my baby. I kicked it five or six time before it ran away.  My little dog needed 16 stitches and had to have most of her teeth pulled. I called the police but they never found the SOB.

Did you ask her why she hates them? Maybe she has a good reason.. maybe one mauled her favorite childhood pet.. who knows? I don't think it's worth getting worked up about or making it an awkward work situation. It's your dog.. her opinion doesn't mean anything.

  • No. I dont like any of them. I have panic attacks when they are near me. I didn't have an opinion of them before but now I can't stand to be near them. You can have one if you like and I don't say anything to people that own them that is your business but after picking up my baby all soaked in blood and broken I can't handle being near them.
