Should I cut my hair?

Random question, I know, especially since none of you have ever seen me!  But I'm sitting here waiting for a developer at work to finish something so I can test and felt like seeking opinions.  I have never had hair this long in my life - it is well down past my shoulder blades and it's kind of thicker and unruly because I haven't gotten it cut since well before Noah was born.  All I do is wear it in a pony tail because A.  I don't know what else to do with it and B.  I don't have time to do anything else most days.

DH says he loves it and doesn't want me to get it cut - he has the typical male thing of loving long hair no matter what.  I think I would look better with a shorter cut, which is what I have had more often than not in the past.  I can take care of it better and I can at least manage to style it a little with a blowdryer and round brush.  But I hate to disappoint him because he is so adamant that he loves my hair long.

I was thinking if I can find time for an appointment I could compromise and get it cut shorter, but not necessarily short - like maybe to my shoulders or just past that.

What do you think?  How much would you weigh your DH's opinion on your own hair?

I admire you for keeping your long hair, because I cut mine in my first pregnancy.  Do what you want to do, I think shorter hair is easier with 2 kids.  Mine is curly, so long hair is really crazy.  Oh, and DH doesn't have to keep cleaning it from the drain....

  • Dh has no say in how I wear my hear. When we first met, I had a pixie cut. I cut mine in Decemer. It is now just below my ears. it was to the middle of my back before that, but all I did was wear it in a ponytail all the time...I just got lazy with it. my hair is thick , curly and can get frizzy. I love my new style. I always did like shorter hair anyway, but for some reason just let it keep growing sine Fiona was born. I feel more stylish as well.
  • I would not base my decision on my DH simply liking long hair w/ no regard to what really looks best and works best for me.  I have a friend who is much like you - her DH loves long hair, but when it gets to a certain length, all she does it pull it back in a pony tail.  She looks so much better when it's cut nicely and frames her face and she's able to wear it down.

  • The first problem is that you have not been to a stylist in 5 months!! You need to go and have it cut, if not shorter but into a style. A good stylist can cut your hair in a way that is manageable for any length and lifestyle.

  • Ugghhh....I need a hair cut too.  I haven't cut mine since last Memorial Day!  I prefer long hair so I'm not going to cut it but maybe a trim.  I can always wear up if it gets in the way.  I don't have time to be going to the salon all the time so I won't wear it short.  Also, I'm tall so short hair will look funky on me.

My thoughts too!  I have very long hair.. down the middle of my back.  But I worked with my hairstylist to grow it this long to make it easier for me to wear it - but it has style too.  I have super curly hair & unless I have time in the morning to blow dry it straight it would look worse short.  I don't have time right now.  I never wear my hair up (well, okay today I wore a hat since I did not feel like washing it & it is raining out ; )  But sometimes you need to give your hair a break!

  • I say that before you change the length, you need to update the style.  Layers or a change will make you feel better.  I have shoulder-length hair and find it easier to take care of than shorter hair (my hair curls some but mostly frizzes).

ITA, which is why my hair has stayed long. DH has given his opinion on my hair, I used to ignore it and come back with what I thought would look good and it turned out totally awful. He's pretty right on when he says why he thinks a certain style will or won't work.So I run a few ideas by him and take the ones that suit me the best to my stylist. And then she usually narrows it down from there. I haven't been disappointed when I listen to them both.

  • I think you should if you feel like doing it. Don't worry about your H. My hair was really long when I met H, and he "really liked" it. I kept cutting it shorter and shorter, and now it never goes below the shoulder level. H still "really likes" it.

  • I always wore mine short (chin-length was as long as it got) until I met Rom.  I knew he loved long hair, so I tried it.  I actually like that I can leave the house in a ponytail or (more frequently) braids, it's so much easier than blowdrying and styling.

I have curly hair, mostly white, and it does get frizzy and poofy.  I have long layers cut in, so I have a few options for styling when I wear it down.  I love that I can straighten it, or do a classic, movie-star wave thing, or pull it up with little curly tendrils hanging down.  You lose options with a short cut, I think.

Still, it's all about how you feel.

  • I chopped my waist-length hair off a few months PP and miss it like crazy, but if you prefer it shorter I'd say cut it. It's nice too make your H happy, but you're the one who has to take care of it.
  • I have thick, wavy long hair and I love it.  It's a few inches past my shoulders.  I agree with pp; one of the advantages of long hair is that you can tie it back when you're in a rush.  I often straighten it and it stays like that for days with a quick once-over with the flat iron.  It actually looks better on days 2 & 3.

  • I always ask DH's opinion, but he REFUSES ti give it to me, which it probably a good thing.

I agree w/ pp that a trim will really shape it up.  I also think BANGS do wonders for updating a look! Plus, they really look cute even if your hair is pulled back in a ponytail.  Good luck!

  • Thanks for all the opinions, ladies!!  I think those of you who said I need to just get to the stylist are probably right. I feel so blah since it hasn't been shaped or trimmed or anything in months.  My stylist, who I've been going to for about 5 years now, is in a new salon that is like a 30 minute drive away, plus whenever I go to her she takes a good long time with me, so it is always at least a 2-3 hour adventure.  Unfortunately with the two kids I just haven't made the time to go.  But I think it is exactly what I need - I will go see her and let her shape it up and give it some sort of flair, and see how that goes.  I can always still go back and get it chopped off if that doesn't work out.

  • I'm late to the party but agree with the pp in general.  It's my hair and my say, but I do try to keep DH's preferences in mind a little bit.  And think about layers - for almost two years I had my hair longer and it is thick!  The layers really helped make it easier to take care of and looked so much better than all one length and heavy.  Just make sure it can still be pulled up!  GL and have fun!
  • I would go and get it cleaned up and see how you like it first.  Not because of your DH, but because I hadn't been in a while and was 3 mo. PP and went in and the woman butchered me. If I had just had it cleaned up and had her create (well someone else, because she truly sucked) a style, I think I would have been happy. It is finally as long now as it was when I had her hack it off.

You can always go back in and get it cut shorter.....
