Anyone taken an older (3/4yo) child to the museums? I am going away next week for work (all week) and Maggie seems sad about it so I was thinking of taking Friday off and going in to one of the Smithsonian museums since it is supposed to be really nice outside too. I was thinking Natural History with the dinosaurs would be the best bet. Any experiences or tips?
Re: Smithsonian Museums
Yes, yes, yes to the Natural History museum...DH took DD#1 last summer (she was almost 4 at the time) and she loved it--there are lots of kid-friendly exhibits. I'm not sure if the butterfly exhibit is still there, but that was a definite highlight for DD.
Just be prepared to see less of the museum that you might do if you were with adults. DH & DD got there around 10/11am and DD was ready to go by 2:30 (of course part of that was because DH's meal planning was a little off, but even considering that it's probably a good timeframe to plan on.)
Have fun!
The Playzone at the National Building Museum is an another idea. The Botanical Gardens are also very fun.
Last year I took my 6 year old goddaughter to Air & Space and she was very disappointed. She expected the rocket to blast off when we were inside.
We took our kids to Natural History a few weeks ago and they both loved it - especially the gemstones (princess jewels!), dinosaurs, and butterflies (we didn't pay for tickets to the special exhibit, but they looked at butterflies in cases) and bugs.
I think we'll do American History next. There are kid-friendly rooms there and DD1 I think will really like the Dresses from First Ladies exhibit.
American History was wonderful. DD(4) loved it there. We spent three hours in just those two rooms alone. She also like going through Julia Childs kitchen.
