D.C. Area Babies

Where will you vacation this summer w/ LO's?

I will have a 3 month old this summer and we are looking for vacation ideas.  I like the beach but no that we will only get minimal time outside with an infant so there needs to be other things to do in the area - boardwalk, shopping etc.  Any recommendations or where are you going that has these things?

Re: Where will you vacation this summer w/ LO's?

  • We're going to the Outer Banks. We went every year when I was growing up, including when I was an infant.

  • I think we'll be going to the Hudson Valley & renting a cabin or something.  But more like September, not full on summertime.
  • I think we're going to the Pacific Northwest.

  • We'll be doing our usual - lots of weekend trips to Bethany, OC and Chincoteague (we're kind of spoiled with family beach house options).

  • This year we aren't going anywhere but last year we went to Rohoboth beach for a long weekend and stayed at the Avenue Inn. It was a very kid friendly hotel, they have a breakfast every morning that's included in the price, and they have a heated indoor pool. They also have some rooms with a living room area separated by a door which is good for the putting the kid in so the parents don't have to go to bed at 7pm. The rooms have fridges which is good for keeping milk, snacks and wine. It's about a 3 block walk from the beach and it's right on the main drag where all of the shops and restaurants are. If you are looking for a getaway for a few days, I highly recommend it.

  • My kids are older so we are going to the beach and LA this summer. We went to the beach in May when DD was a baby because it wasn't too hot. I felt ok with her under the umbrella and then we could do stuff in the evening. We also went to Lake Champlain in Vermont. It doesn't get hot there like it does here and we have family who lives there.

  • We always go to a beach on the NC coast - Holden. DS was 8 months old last year and it was perfect. We took a big cabana type thing and he hung out under there a lot, we even took a little pool that he sat in some. Honestly, it was a lot of fun. This summer he'll be running all over the place....

  • What is this "vacation" you speak of?  Stick out tongue

For us, we used up all our leave/vacation days for when our babies were born so we haven't had an actual vacation with our kids yet.  Any leave accrued in the meantime has been spent on various illnesses (the kids and ours).  Trips to see DH's family (Iowa and Alabama - not exactly popular vacation destinations), yes, but not an actual planned vacation.

But next year! - next year we'll finally have some leave saved for a trip that could be defined as a vacation - so reading the responses to your post is really helpful.  Thanks for this post!

Think anyone would notice if we started claiming to be part of the Eeclem Family?  I mean, nobody would notice five extra people showing up at a family beach house right?  We'd just blend in?  Stick out tongue

  • Charleston, SC. We visit family, but what we like about Charleston is that there's a lot of activities relatively close together. Downtown there is a children's museum with a toddler-friendly play section, aquarium, and parks, and within driving distance there are gardens, plantations and the beach. Add in shopping and that you pretty much can't choose a bad place to eat and it's a great family vacation.

  • I go back to work at the end of April so I won't really have any leave to speak of over the summer but we are going to try for a long weekend at the beach (probably Bethany or Rehoboth) or a long weekend around Ithaca, NY. I'm a bit more nervous about Ithaca since it's a much longer drive. LO will be 7 months in August so hopefully it won't be too bad.

  • We're going to the Outer Banks and Bethany this summer.  For spring break we're going to Watercolor, FL (on the panhandle near Pensacola).  It's a fantastic family resort.  My favorite family resort in FL.

Some other ideas that we've taken our kids:

    Kiawah, SC

    Amelia Island, FL

    Sanibel, FL

Although if you're going in the summer you probably won't want to go to FL with an infant-too hot.

  • We have a week booked at a cabin on a lake in Maine. MIL lives right down the street so we will have a nice mix of visiting family (her side of the family lives there as well) and alone time by the lake.

    I can't wait!

We go to Holden Beach every summer too.  My mom and stepdad live down there.

I was just thinking something along these lines ;-)

  • We're doing a cruise out of Baltimore in November. LO will be 11 months old then and his 7 mo cousin and fam will also be coming. We think it will be great to have all of the fun and/or relaxing things on the ship plus some cool sites/activities at the ports.

Yeah, sure. Come on down, guys! You'll just have to spend quality time with my BSC mother and just slightly irritating in laws. It'll be fun!

  • We're going on an Alaska cruise before I go back to work in July. We love cruises and think they should be an easy (in a relative sense) way to travel with kids, since everything is so self-contained.
