What kind of formula do you use?

With DS#1, we had to use a specific, pricier formula.  I am *hoping* we'll be able to do something different with DS#2.  He'll be exclusively formula-fed.  Does anyone have any experience with the Costco formula?  Any other kind you like, that is more economical than Similac/Enfamil?  Even though it's only been a couple years, it looks like formula options out there have evolved some.

Thanks!

  • T had a sensitive stomach so we used gentlease, but we found that Target made their own version of it.  So instead of $22 a can we only spent $12.  They a lot of different kind as well.  I am sure Costco's brand is very similar, just more generic than Similac.

  • We mainly used the Target brand, but would occasionally get the Kirkland brand if we were at Costco.  Lucy did just fine on both.  We found that with Target coupons and/or a sale, the Target brand was actually cheaper than Costco.

  • We didn't need any special formula stuff, so we kind of made our way through all the usuals.  Similac and Enfamil were fine. Costco brand (which I know works well for a lot of people) we ended up hating - it foamed up WAY more and the bubbles never really receded, and when L would spit up (which was all the time) it was almost chunky!  We ended up switching to the regular Target brand and it was perfect for us.  And at $14ish for 40 oz, it's a steal.
  • We primarily bf, W got mixed bottles when I was gone, and now does a formula bottle at bedtime.  We used Similac because they kept sending me coupons and I liked the "to go" packs since we were occaional users.  I recently got the Costco formula and he seems fine with it.

Since Costco takes formula checks you could do the Similac, but it is more expensive.  Hopefully your little guy won't be picky and you can pick up whatever is on sale/coupon/checks.

  • We use the Costco brand, and use mylicon if it's too bubbly; one drop setles the bottle if we shook it too hard.  Although, reading this, I may give the Target one a try.  K doesn't seem to have any sensitivity issues that we've noticed.  We did enfamil first  [used the free sample from the mail] when we weaned off breastmilk, and then went straight to Costco and have used that ever since.

  • we used costco formula with cruz, it was great!  I believe costco formula is similac and sams club is enfamil?  or vise versa but they worked great for us.

  • There is hope!  DD#1 was gassy and colicky and had to be put on soy (which we bough the WalMart brand so it was still cheap).  DD#2 has been on the Costco Kirkland brand and has been fine with it!

  • We mostly used Target's version of Gentlease. I tried Costco once and hated how foamy it got and it seemed to take a lot of shaking for the powder to disolve.  Another Target advantage?  Target's everywhere and they're open until 10pm in case you have a formula emergency.

I'd also use Enfamil if there was a good sale and I had a formula check. Walgereen's would run some great deals with register rewards.

  • We use Similac Sensitive mainly.  We tried the Costco brand but it made DS constipated.  Ash told me that she had heard it did that to other kids.  Costco has the Similac Sensitive in a 2lb jug for $27.

With DD we have done the formula game, like you did with DS#1.  I think the Target brands are great deals for the standard Similacs and Enfamils.  Such good deals.

  • Thanks everyone!  Sounds like the Target brand is a winner.  I'll check out Target and Costco.  I have my fingers crossed this baby will not need special formula!  :)
