Prenatal Vitamines

Hello everyone,

My doctor told me that it is best to start taking prenatal vit. before pregnancy. She told me i can start any time and take them every day. Did you take prenatal vit. before getting pregnant? Also, which ones do you recommend? Anything i should know.

Thank you,

R :)

Definitely, starting to take prenatal vitamins before getting pregnant is adviced. The baby's spine starts forming early on in the pregnancy, many times before women realize they are pregnant. Prenatal vitamins contain folic acid, an important vitamin that helps decrease the chance of neural tube defects (in the spine). So maintaining an adequate level of folic acid before getting pregnant makes sure you don't miss that window period when the fetus' spine is developing.

I use Obtrex DHA. It's by prescription so depends on your insurance and what they cover. But it's nice because it's not very big, does not taste bad, and it contains a stool softener. Prenatal vitamins are known to constipate a bit otherwise. Also, most but not all prenatals contain DHA. That's "fish oil", thought to be important for baby's brain. So that's another thing to look out for!

  • Do you take prenatal vit. every day before you get pregnant? Can you take them as long as you want before you get pregnant? Also, what if i dont take them before getting pregnant?

  • You should take a prenatal vitamin every day while TTC.  You should start now but you can take an OTC prenatal if you want.  Some women like the Target brand prenatal since it's cheap.  You can ask your doctor.

Prenatal vitamins have folic acid in them.  That's important to have in your system before you get pregnant and during the early weeks of pregnancy.  Having enough folic acid helps prevent birth defects like spina bifida.  The neural tube is formed very early in pregnancy.

Just because they are called "prenatal" vitamins doesn't mean that you have to be pregnant to take them.  They are just regular ones but in appropriate amounts for when you get pregnant.

They actually recommend all women of child bearing age to take a prenatal vitamin or folic acid just in case of a surprise pregnancy.

Can you take them as long as you want before you get pregnant? Sure.

Also, what if i dont take them before getting pregnant?  i don't know what will happen. but you won't be reducing your chances of neural tube defects.

  • Ditto what everyone else said. I took Gummy Pre-Natal vits (I'm a wuss when it comes to swallowing pills). I got them at Target.

  • these are the ones my doctor recommend to me: https://www.vitamedmd.com/p-23-vitamedmd-prenatal-1-with-200mg-lifesdha.aspx and the only suggestion i have is take them at night. that the beginning it takes a while to get use to any pre natal vitamin i am not sure what it is whether it is the dha or the amount of iron but if you take them at night like before bed you can sleep through the feeling. and as time passes you can slowly move them to the morning if you like. i have just left them at night out of habit.
