Babies: 0 - 3 Months

vent: dh cannot calm our baby.

He tries a strategy and it does not work. so he just keeps doing it. then gives up and just lets dc cry. Nonstop. He thinks he is trying so hard to calm her and she just won't stop crying,. He is not willing to be creative when it comes to calming her. he doesn't have any paternal instincts :(.

Re: vent: dh cannot calm our baby.

  • Hah, no paternal instincts, that is funny. He will get the hang of it, try letting him take care of her when you are gone and after a couple of tries I am sure he will figure it out. GL and it gets easier.

  • I'm not sure  how old your baby is, but it takes time for some guys. Before I had DD, DH was great with everyone else's babies, but ours seemed to stump him. Have you tried suggesting things that work? Maybe watch the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD together?

Also, men sometimes use completely different soothing techniques. My cousin carried his kids and my DD around in a football hold, and it worked like a charm.

  • i tried to show DH how to hold the baby in a way that i have found calms him EVERY TIME.  DH said it was stupid and it doesn't work and he refused to even try it.  after another 10 minutes of him "trying" to calm him down (which consisted of holding him upright and begging him to stop crying), i took DS and held him the way i told DH to, and he was out in about 30 seconds. but that doesn't work, right DH?
  • I second the recommendation of the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD.  DH and I watched that before DD was born.  I see him use a lot of the techniques (plus some of his own made-up techniques) - I think the DVD really gave him some confidence and put him more at ease about how to calm a crying baby.

  • DH has the same problem.  He has no idea how to calm DD unless I give him suggestions.  I went out to drop off drycleaning last night and she cried the entire time I was gone.  She was alseep when I got home b/c she had cried herself to sleep while he was holding her.  He has convinced himself that she will not take a bottle from him, b/c he doesn't try to give her one until she is already too worked up.  I try to let him do his own thing, but he is really terrible about understanding her cues.
