What a COOL toy!

I hope I'm not the only one that thinks this is pretty awesome!

Maybe I should get this to house my iTouch when J uses it...he makes me nervous!

Re: What a COOL toy!

  • I find the reviews/comments very amusing.  I'm not sure how I feel about it.  I don't have an iphone or itouch but DH does and I don't think he would like Nic to be playing with it.

I understand both sides. J only gets my iTouch when everything else fails (snacks, his toys/books) when we're out, but it has bought me some extra shopping/errand time in lieu of a major meltdown. I've also used it when he had to go with us to our financial planners office...lifesaver that day!

I'm pretty anti-battery operated toys anyway, so when J gets this it's a big treat. It's not something I would want him to use all the time, but there are some very education apps out there. However I usually put a video slideshow or movie on for him, so I'm not taking advantage of the education quality for him...oh well!

  • I don't have either, but that is a really cool idea!
  • Sign me up for the iPhone case!  I use my phone to entertain my 4-year old nephew with YouTube videos a lot when we are out to eat.  (Not my kid, so I'm not too concerned about the educational value.  Stick out tongue hehe)  But I expect to use it with Alex in a pinch as well as he grows.

    Thanks

  • I hope you don't think I'm judging. I have nothing against battery operated gadgets for Nic.  We resort to the netbook/Ipad and let him watch Mickey on long drives but I'm not sure I would buy this toy to encourage him to play w/ my DH's phone. That is all.
  • SWEET! I'm buying one. I do let Keira play with my iTouch. She LOVES this app called Monkey Preschool Lunchbox. It has really helped her counting, colors, and she can even play the memory game---WELL! It's really impressive!  I have no problem with her playing with mine and now I can' stop freaking out she'll ruin it!

    Nope - I understand!

I have a personal vendetta against battery toys for J...they hurt my ears and drive me nuts! But that's just my issue :)

  • My husband has been sharing his iPhone with our (now 2yo) toddler for at least 6-8 months. At first there were issues of our son wanting to put the phone in his mouth, but as he got a little older, then it just became an issue of him pushing the home button all the time. We recently bought BubCap home button covers, and they solved the problem of him pressing the home button (check out bubcap.com to see the details).

I'm pretty sure that some of the apps our son uses have really helped him learn the names of numerals at an early age, and also help him speak some sounds he had  trouble saying. I think the app I'd most recommend is Tozzle - our son loves it, and it really teaches a lot with it's puzzles, as it says the names of numbers, letters, foods, etc. It also gets advanced with puzzle layers, and shows toddlers how components (of a train or car) can make up a whole. I won't turn this into an Tozzle ad, but it's a really great value because it has so many puzzles, and it updates with more puzzles every few months.

TigaTalk is a toddler speech app that has kids repeat different sounds in game situations. It actually listens for your child to respond, forcing them to be interactive (unlike a kid's show, where they pause for your child to respond, but it doesn't matter if your child says anything or not). I didn't expect our son to take to this app, he was a late bloomer in the speaking department. But he really liked using TigaTalk right from the start, and it seems to have helped him. It's also helped us realize a few isolated sounds he has trouble making.

Bottom line, I don't think claiming that some apps have educational value is a stretch at all. If you are okay with your child watching a certain amount of educational TV each day (I'm sure all mom's have different TV limits they set), I don't see any issues with allowing your child to spend a little time with educational apps on your iPhone. And, as I've found, a little iPhone app distraction can be a lifesaver when your in an unexpectedly long line running errands with your toddler.
