Two Under 2

S/O: Crossovers - Could you comfortably sit in back with two carseats?

DH and I were originally checking out the Traverse since it had two back rows and we could opt for captain seats in the second row, putting one carseat in each.  We take two long-ass road trips per year to Michigan so we are keeping this in mind while looking for our next vehicle.  We figured the third row would be more comfortable for one of us to sit back there with the kids and then we could put some luggage back there but also get a luggage carrier to put on top.

But for the sake of looking at other (maybe less expensive) options, do you think you could or do you sit comfortably (or is it even possible, in terms of safety) in the back of your smaller (single back row) crossover with two carseats?  What about for a two-day road trip (roughly 10 hours each day)?

If you could, when you answer, tell me what you drive, that would be fab.  I am mostly thinking about the Equinox or the Murano... but I'm open to checking out others, as well... as long as sitting in the back with two carseats is an option!

We have a Saturn Outlook, so bigger than a crossover, but not huge like a Suburban.  The third row is comfortable, but it's almost impossible to get back there if the car seats are RFing in the captains chairs in the middle row.  Also, I would encourage you to think about the future.  If you plan on having another baby, this type of vehicle may not be for you.  We are selling our Saturn because we can't use that third row with 2 RFing car seats in the captain's chairs, and DS would need to have help to get to his seat in the third row and get safely buckled in.

  • We are looking into another SUV also. We are planning on having a 3rd so we really need a 3rd row. I will say that I have a chevy trailblazer right now with 2 car seats in the back and while you can have someone sit back there is is no where near comfortable. Im not sure the equinox or murano will be roomy enough either!

  • We used to have the Nissan Murano...and nobody could sit in between the two carseats. Iam sure you could with some of the larger crossovers. We upgraded to a chevy suburban and are in love with it!

  • And what previous post said...Think about the future...if you plan on having more kids. In my opinion...if you plan on having three or more...go for the largest crossover you can find or buy an SUV. We hated our Murano as soon as we brought our second home...Our inlaws have a Buick Enclave and that can be doable.

  • Okay, thanks!  We are not sure about a third child but you never know when an "oops" might happen.  I think y'all just reaffirmed my preference for a Traverse though.  We will do a three-year lease and if we plan to have more kids, TTC definitely won't take place until 2013 so we may be able to squeeze by. • I have the Nissan Rogue and there is no way someone can sit inbetween the 2 car seats. My lease is up in a couple of months and we are going to get the Toyota Sienna.

  • I own a Lexus RX400h and there is no way to fit a person between 2 car seats. Well, maybe right now with the infant carrier someone very very thin could squeeze in, but once there are two convertibles seats in there -- definitely no.

We actually bought DH a new car in preparation for DS2 being born. It's a GMC Acadia. I think it's the same body as the Traverse, but just one step up (with the Buick Enclave being the next step above the Acadia). It has been great with the 2 captain's chairs and third row. We keep it folded down a lot, but it's definitely come in handy with family coming in town.

    Good luck with your decision.

  • Definitley check out the Chrysler Pacifica!!!! WE LOVE OURS, very very spacious, great trunk space, and still room in the backseat with 2 car seats, and huge trunk space!

They have 2 models, one with the 3rd row and one with out! Both are AWESOME!!

  • We have a Nissan Murano and I have riden in the back many times for long road trips (with the carseat in the middle) and my DH has as well.  Once the 2nd baby arrives, we'll put one carseat in the middle and the other behind either the driver's seat or passenger's seat, which will allow an adult to sit in the back.

  • We have a Ford Edge which we love!  You can sit in the back with two car seats but it is tight.  I wouldn't want to sit back there for a long road trip but it's not bad for shorter trips.  You cannot fit even a booster car seat in the middle though so we are selling ours for a minivan now... I will be sad to see it go :(

  • we have a 4runner, and you can fit 2 carseats and a booster seat in the back, so I would guess you could probably ride back there.

I know because we've had our LO1 and niece and nephew back there on vacation.
