Trying to Get Pregnant

Allergy Meds and TTC

My spring allergies showed up today. Called my allergist and he said that it was not recommended to get my usual allergy shot while TTC. Anybody know of any OTC allergy meds that are okay to take while TTC???

Re: Allergy Meds and TTC

  • Zyrtec is pregnancy safe, so I assume it's TTC safe.

  • Benadryl and Sudafed are both safe while pregnant, which means ok while TTC.  Be careful with the allergy meds around O because they can dry up CM.

  • Decongestants like Sudafed and anti-histamines like Claritin, Zyrtec & Allegra are all safe, but can decrease your chances of TTC. From what I have read it is recommended to avoid them a little before O and during the 2 week wait. So basically you are miserable except during you period (when you are miserable for other reasons).

  • Crap. I have horrible allergies and take Claritin every day, year-round. That's going to suck when we start TTC.

How about nose sprays like Nasonex?

I've been meaning to ask this question too. Why is it that they can decrease your chances of conceiving?

OP: Here's what's on my OB's website about safe medications during pregnancy:

     Nasal Congestion:    Sudafed, dextromethorphan, guaifenesin

    Runny nose/watery eyes:
Allergies:    Claritin or generic, Zyrtec or generic
            Colds & Flu:    Chlor-Trimetron /generic or Benadryl Allergy/generic

Follow UP question...I know that allergy meds during O time can decrease your CM. (I've actually stopped my allergy meds for the last few days, as I am waiting to O...hoping that might make a difference this cycle.) But, I've never read anything about the 2WW...do  you recall if you read why this was recommended. I am stuffy and itchy after 3 days with no antihistamine; not sure I can last for 2 weeks without it. I was planning on starting it again once I received my CH's.

  • My doctor told me she didn't recommend Claritin while TTC and 1st trimester.  She recommended Chlortrimeton until at least the 2nd tri -- which sucks, because Claritin is 24 hour, and Chlortrimeton is 4 hour!

Definitely ask your doctor -- since there's a wide range of advice out there.

I take zyrtec year round and recently read that it dries up CM. So I decided to stop taking it on CD 10. Wow has it made a difference! It was def drying up my CM bc I had a ton of EWCM today. I'm curious to hear why not to take it during the 2WW.
  • I use Zyrtec and my doc told me it's safe for TTC and pregnancy.   I would be miserable without it.  It's over the counter and has a generic version.  Both are at a great price in bulk at Costco.

Anyone have any idea of allergy meds and 2ww?

  • I am glad I opened this...I take Zyrtec during this time of year and it never even entered my head that it might impact TTC bc I had heard that it was safe during pregnancy.  Damn it.
