DD freaks out about Dr-related things

DD has been freaking out about dr-related stuff... she has pink eye and I have left over drops the pedi said to use (he told me to save them from last time).  She cried all morning, vomited because she was so upset, and was screaming hysterically.  Finally I had to pin her down to put ONE drop in.

I hate doing this.  I mean I spent like an hour telling her it is 1 drop.  Like how she gets splashed with a whole wave of water in the bathtub by her sister.  Or how she got snowflakes in her eye the other day.  How her eye will start to hurt and itch if she doesn't have this.  I ask her why she is scared and she says she just doesn't like it.  I talked to her for at least an hour.  I hate having to restrain her.

I know that her 4 year Dr visit is going to be really awful.  There is no way she is going to sit and let someone take blood from her finger or sit and let them give her a shot.  I don't even know about looking in her mouth or ears.  And recently she won't let me clip her toenails.

Any suggestions?  And what happens if they are so hysterical at the Dr?  Do they skip the shots?  I feel bad that she is so scared, I hate restraining her.

  • Maybe you could get a doctor kit and do some role playing?

For things that I know will hurt/be uncomfortable, the phrase that I always use is that it hurts for a minute and then it's done.

  • She has this awesome book, "Elmo goes to the Dr".. and she does refer to it a lot.. but then when it comes time for the real deal she just freaks out.

I went over how her eye will hurt more and get really itchy if I don't put the drops in, so she actually let me do 1 round.  Only took me like 3 hours!!

  • My DD has a doctor kit. We also have a few books about going to the doctor and I've taken her with me for my check up so she can see the thermometer, etc doesn't "hurt". Our peds are also great about letting her touch everything that doesn't have to stay sterile. So she touches the light for her ears, the stethoscope, etc. She does tense up when the nurse that often gives vax comes in. Can you do some rewards for being good about the drops to clear up her eyes? Not ideal to bribe but you don't want to have to wrestle her every dose.

  • Role-playing is a good idea, but her reactions make me wonder if she's feeling ok. Do all these things hurt her beyond normal pain? I would talk to the doctor about it. Also, a friend of mind told me about something you can get to help with the shots. It's called LMX4 and you request it from the pharmicist. Apply it at directed before she gets any shots and it numbs the area. GL!!
