2nd Trimester

Possible Placenta Previa

Because I just turned 35 I had the screening for downs syndrome and various other things.  I had this test at 12 weeks.  It consisted of blood work and an ultrasound.  I received a call 2 days after the testing from the nurse.  She said your ultrasound looks good but we can't see the cervix or the placenta so we can't rule out placenta previa.  To be on the safe side the doctor wants you to go on pelvic rest until the 20 week ultrasound.  I tried to ask some questions but she was clearly rusing me off the phone.  My question is, do they not see the cervix because it's possible no shots were taken of it or is it more than likely the placenta is covering the cervix.  I've read up on it and understand not to get alarmed right away but i'm jut curious.

Re: Possible Placenta Previa

  • It seems weird she would explain it like that, I would call back for a better explanation.

  • During my scan, I asked the tech if she could tell where the placenta was. She said that it was covering the cervix but they don't get too worried until 20 weeks because the uterus will grow and hopefully the placenta will move out of the way. I'm assuming since she could see where it was, she could see the cervix too. Maybe they didn't get a good shot of yours? I would either call back or ask my doctor what was up.

  • I have placenta previa and pelvic rest is not the same as bed rest. You do not have to stay in bed. It means no sex, limited to no exercising, no lifting anything. Call your doctor and ask if they meant bed rest and what do they consider pelvic rest. Plus there are a few types of placenta previa - fully covering (me) partial, and marginal. Depending on which you are classified as depends on your limitations. Even though I am fully covered I am not on pelvic rest bc I haven't had bleeding or spotting. Good luck.

  • Lurking....but I had that with both LO's. Pelvic rest is the norm with Placenta Previa, and they also should have told you to not lift anything over 10Ibs (or atleast what my dr's advised). If they find previa to be the case at the 20 wk u/s they might go into more detail about what it means.

As far as the cervix goes, it's possible it's still sitting inside your pelvic region.
