Success after IF

how much should he eat?

My little guy is probably about 8.5-9lbs right now (at the Dr. two weeks ago he was 8lbs 3oz).  He eats 6 times a day and takes in 2-4 oz's each time (every 3-4hrs).  Should he be eating more?  Everything I read about how much a 2 month old should eat says like 4-5 oz every 3-4 hours but isn't it dependent on weight?  My guy obviously weighs what many newborns weigh...

  • Every baby is different and he is the one who will tell you that he needs more. If he finishes off the bottles, increase it by an ounce and see if he will take more. That is how it was suggested to me to increase D's feeds. You are doing a great job mama!
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

I agree. There is no set amount they need to meet. I've stressed A LOT about how much DS eats, but the reality is that all babies are different and all of them have different needs. Different babies thrive on different amounts. Noah is just now starting to really eat what I consider good. He will be 6 months old in a little over 2 weeks and a GREAT day for him is a total somewhere between 25-30oz. He generally only eats 4oz at a time still. While he is little (13.6lbs on 3/10) his pedi is happy with his growth. You can't force them to eat more if they don't want it. Just feed on demand, offer an ounce more, and if your pedi is happy, dont worry. My pedi said that if he has to give a "guideline" he says at least their weight X's 2. So if he weighs 10 lbs, he will say that 20oz/day is ok but that he really does not like setting them to formulas.

  • What is he eating?  Breast milk or formula?  The amounts he will take in will be different depending.  BM fed babies rarely eat more than 4 ounces at a time because the composition of the BM changes.  FF babies will increase their milk feeds over time.  Ultimately though, let your LO be your guide.

  • Thanks guys, he is formula fed now.  It sounds like he's doing alright.  I always put 4 oz's in the bottle and he usually only sucks it dry once a twice a day, the rest range from 2-3.5 oz's.  The first thing in the AM is usually his biggest bottle so maybe I'll try and add a little more and see what happens.

He's also been dealing with reflux, gas and milk protein issues so feeding has been a rollercoaster and we've been adding / changing meds, formulas etc for the past few weeks.  I ***think*** we are on the mend now though.

Yea I think he is doing great. And tummy issues definitely don't help matters!  At his age Noah was barely doing 3oz at a time. Oddly enough, he has been staying at 4oz for a while. It's so easy to get so worried about it too but the pedi keeps telling me he is doing great. What formula do you have him on now? DS's reflux & gas issues did not start to improve until we put him on Similac Sensitive for Fussiness & Gas. It seemed like we went so long where the poor baby would eat 2oz and then start screaming and not go back to the bottle.

I hope the new combo is just what he needs to make him feel better! He will definitely let you know if he's hungry, but that tummy pain sure does put a wrench in the feedings.
